I've been very quiet on social media this year. A lot of my time has been spent helping setup Misneach Ukraine with 2 friends.

We're helping to equip rehabilitation facilities in Ukraine with gym and medical equipment. We started out with the aim of equipping one facility and currently have enough equipment for closer to 10 facilities - so far.

We've also been collecting medical equipment such as crutches, wheelchairs and hospital beds etc. If you support rehabilitating wounded servicemen, women and children in Ukraine, please follow our page Misneach Ukraine. Thanks, Andy

Top 10 habits of people who are in shape.

If like millions of people, you're trying to get into shape, take on board as many of these as you can and you'll be well on your way to recovering after the Christmas splurge. Even if you can only initially commit to January, it's a big start.

Today is the first day back to work for most people, it's also the most depressing day of the year for lots too. Don't be too hard on yourself, humans have feasted all of our existence, what's done is done, you can quickly get yourself back feeling good and into shape again:

-Batch cook and freeze healthy portioned meals. Always know what your next meal will be.
-Reduce your carb portions
-Always exercise on Saturdays and Mondays
-Reduce your alcohol intake by half and increase your water intake
-Go to bed early, even if you don't sleep right away
-No more than 3 hours of TV or social media per day
-Never eat snacks or meals watching TV
-Exercise (even walking) 5 days a week, for at least 20mins
-Become part of a team. Whether it's simply getting to know a couple of regulars at a gym, joining a tennis club or doing park runs. You get way more out of exercising and stick at it longer, if you're in a tribe.
-Set a target. Not necessarily to lose x amount or fit into a smaller sized clothes, but something like a holiday, wedding or race etc.

Know anyone who drinks a lot of coke?

This is how much sugar is in a 500ml bottle of coke, if you have 1 a day for a week.

53g per 500ml bottle x 7 days = 371g of sugar.


January Friday Motivation 💪


Do you ever eat "salads" like this? Both the "salad" and the McDonalds feast have the same 1500 calories.

Obviously nutritional values will be very different between the 2 plates, but if you are trying to lose weight and regularly eat “salads” like this, you will have little success. The lettuce, tomato and onion are just for decoration in this high calorie meal.

On a side note, the wrap has 460kcals just a few less than the Big Mac at 490kcals. Do you have wraps for lunch? Do you know what's in them?

The Not a Salad has 1502kcals:
300g Round Steak 444kcals, 80g Cheese 333kcals, 80g Egg Mayonnaise 223kcals, 80g Coleslaw 186kcals, 80g Potato Salad 144kcals, 80g Cous Cous 106kcals, An Onion 40kcals, A Tomato 16kcals, Lettuce 10kcals.

McDonalds has 1500kcals:
Bic Mac 490kcals, Sweet Chili Wrap 460kcals, Medium Fries 330kcals, Sugar Ring Donut 210kcals.

You know what works, my advice is to start back with something gentle that you like doing, even if only for 20mins. For me, it'll be a weights session doing my favourite exercises.

It won't be long before you get that first compliment, then there'll be no stopping you💪

Today is Frantic Tuesday in the fitness industry - the 1st day back to work after Christmas for most people.

It's like the Great Depression and the start of a super lent. Mixed in with a little panic, all rolled into one.

I'll NEVER forget the time early January 6/7 years ago, someone left this homemade Pilates "mat" behind in the gents changing room of my gym.

A rolled up bit of carpet held together with a phone charger. We had a new Pilates course starting with a few triathletes on it and I'd emailed everyone the day before, to bring their own mat along. He obviously arrived, realised his error and left it in the changing room

It's ingenious really, MacGyver would be proud. Although I've always wondered if there was a disgruntled wife waking up the next morning, with a hole in her carpet and a dead phone 😂 After 15 years working in gyms, I could write a very good sitcom about it

I just did the Cadburys Rose Challenge. Burn 50 calories (1 rose) as fast as you can, doing any form of exercise.

My time was 2mins 14secs using a turbo trainer. Why don't you try it and tag me or send me a screenshot from your fitness tracker. Anyone who beats me gets a free online personal training session.

You can do it any way you like running, cycling, HIIT etc. Be sure to warm up first. It's just 50 calories, how bad can it be 😂 Not suitable for anyone who's not already fit and I take no responsibility for any illness, injury or loss of dignity that may occur trying this challenge 💪.

If nothing else it'll make you think twice about how many of these sweats you consume. Tag someone who you think might be fit enough?


Delighted to be providing Christmas trees and Christmas dinners again this year, for the older residents of Alone.

It's my 6th year doing this and it's such a reletively simple and lovely thing to do. It's really heartwarming when we go back in January to take the trees down and we hear how much they enjoyed them.

Some are very much alone over Christmas and while we take family and friends for granted, doing this has really made me appreciate everything I have. Even more so, since lockdowns began.

So many elderly people are Alone and in crisis for one reason or another and it's nice to be able to bring a little joy to a few. Please think of your older relatives and neighbours over Christmas and follow ALONE Ireland for more information.

A huge thank you to Fitzgeralds "the Homestead" for providing Christmas dinners again, for Fir Trees for their continued support giving the trees for free and to Murex who sponsored me this year and ensured we could update and renew the decorations, so they hopefully last another 5/6 years.
