Copied from 'Under The Ropes'
Iman Barlow "Pretty Killer" has announced her retirement from Muay Thai in an Instagram video, citing the mental hardship of always waiting to get a call for a fight that never comes.
"In the last 4 years, I've started endless fight camps on a maybe, but I just kept convincing myself that it was the fight game, just to get on with it, and [that] something would always come through. But in all honesty, it didn't really. How can I keep competing at such a high level with gaps in my career?"
She signed to ONE Championship in 2019, and has only had 2 fights since.
"I've asked to go my own way, so I don't have to retire, but this was declined. This is not what I am about, and not what I stand for."
Iman is now 30 and has been fighting since the age of 4, racking up 128 fights with 120 wins, 3 draws, and 5 losses. Being locked into a stagnant contract means she has been robbed of the opportunity not only to continue her career, but also to end it on her own terms.
Based on Iman's announcement, this decision was rooted not in a desire to stop fighting, but in a need to escape the stress of constantly training at a high level without being given any opportunity to perform.
"It's time to take the stress away", she said.
Iman's incredible career will go down in the history books, but it shouldn't have had to end like this.
