MII TED Talk Club - Dylan Marron: Empathy is not Endorsement - Video Now Available
We had a great discussion on Tuesday about the Dylan Marron presentation. Anna Doyle considered it an almost perfect video on how NOT to mediate - what Dylan did by approaching his online trolls and recording their conversations was not particularly VICS: voluntary, independent, confidential or self-determining.
But there were many lessons that could be applied by mediators, such as...
There are different ways to respond to being called derogatory names, such as beta male, snowflake, and cuck. Not all of them will make you feel better.
Sometimes you need to let the anger out and allow parties to vent.
Shutting down opposing viewpoints is only supported by your supporters.
Anger is a mediator's friend - we can explore what's behind the anger.
Providing opportunities for reflection can lead to reconciliation.
People can move from monologue to dialogue if we provide the safe space for them to speak, listen and hear.
Many thanks to our panel of Anna Doyle, Avril Sheridan, and Andrea O'Neill, and to our chair, Scott Alexander. Watch the video recording
All are welcome to our TED Talks Club, not only MII members, so please spread the word and share the link. Our next meeting is on 16th July at 13.00 GMT on Zoom

Booking is now open for the MII Annual Conference in Belfast.
October 18th and 19th sees the return of the annual conference for mediators on the island of Ireland – bigger than last year, full of practical lessons and learning points, and relevant to all mediators, regardless of your specialist sector or particular perspective.
And, for the first time in the MII’s history, we’re holding the conference in Belfast, the scene of much conflict and resolution over the past 50+ years. It’s now home to many examples of creative perspective-sharing and a variety of positive peace initiatives. So, lots of learning for mediators even before we look at the programme…
All of our speakers have been asked to share insights that will be of value to all mediators, so that delegates will gain knowledge from every session that may be applied by them in which ever sector they operate.

MII TED Talk Club: Interesting Videos for Mediators
The Mediators’ Institute of Ireland is starting a TED Talk Club for MII members and others with an interest in dispute resolution, the structure being a fairly simple one:
* We will hold a Zoom meeting at lunchtime on the third Tuesday of every month.
* We will introduce a relevant video and watch same (most are 10-15 minutes long).
* We will discuss with a small panel and the audience their thoughts on the video and how it, or the lessons contained therein, might be used by mediators.
* We will repeat each month, with a different video and panel.
Our first meeting will be on 16th January 2024 at 1.00 pm and our video will be…
Julia Dhar: How to disagree productively and find common ground.
Some days, it feels like the only thing we can agree on is that we can't agree -- on anything. Drawing on her background as a world debate champion, Julia Dhar offers three techniques to reshape the way we talk to each other so we can start disagreeing productively and finding common ground -- over family dinners, during work meetings and in our national conversations.
Everyone is welcome to join the MII TED Talk Club, not just MII members, so feel free to spread the word.
Our first panel members will be Ber Barry-Murray, Bob Cree-Hay and Anna Doyle and the session will be chaired by Scott Alexander.
