Can saying you were made redundant in your interview be a red flag?
Having spoken with a few people who were made redundant, that has been their experience. Someone said, "as soon as I mentioned redundancy, the silence became loud"
What should you do then?
No, don't lie.
Instead,
✔️ keep the reason for your departure brief, factual, and positive. Avoid playing the victim or speaking negatively about your previous employer. For example, say:
The business shifted its strategic direction, and my entire department was impacted by the reorganisation
OR
My role was made redundant due to budget cuts and not performance related.
✔️ Immediately shift the focus from your job loss to your achievement. For example, say:
During my time there, I was proud to have [mention 3 achievements,], that relates directly to the role you are interviewing for and show how you can achieve the same for them.
✔️ Then, share what you have been doing since then. For example, say:
While being made redundant was unexpected, it has given me the chance to refocus on my career goals and seek out a role, like this one, that is a perfect match for my experience. I have also dedicated some time to acquire knowledge of AI for Business or mention relevant skills.
✔️ Verbalise your needs or ask for the job:
I am now ready for my next challenge and genuinely excited about the opportunity to bring my skills to (name the company) and contribute to your team/company.
Thank them for their time and keep your head up high.
What was your experience in your job search after a redundancy?

Yesterday, Efe and I went to MO's house warming party.
Truly proud of MO for buying her first home.
MO reached out to me about 5 years ago for mentorship. First, we sorted out her career. MO has been promoted twice since starting her career in Ireland.
Then, I challenged her to buy her home. She saved up, listened to every detail and 9 months after that conversation, she was mortgage draw-down.
MO did it. MO is beautiful. I am proud of her.
MO was raised by a strong mama. I am delighted for Mo and her mum.
More grace to MO. Omo dada. God bless you.
❤️

The Immigrant journey can be lonely, but it does not need to be.
When most of us relocate, we find a familiar space or circle. That is very good, as that can make you feel at home. What do I mean?
You find people from your home Church or community and hang out with them. Again, that is good, very good.
However, to learn the culture of where you have found yourself, you need to network broadly. For example, your classmate who was born and raised in your new country is likely to have different cultural values. Those values are important for you to know and learn so you are "culturally fit."
Being culturally fit does not mean changing who you are. It means knowing how things are done in your new location.
For example, you may have been taught that looking people in the eye is rude. If, in your new location, looking people in the eye means you are confident, you must embrace that.
OR
If, culturally, where you are from, you need to address people with Mr or Mrs [Prefix] before their names, and in your new place, everyone is addressed by their first names, you need to adapt to that. For example, Ricky is Ricky and not Mr Ricky. You must feel comfortable doing so, too. Of course, while being respectfully.
The little changes can help you become culturally fit faster and help you succeed, whether in your interviews or in your interactions with your colleagues.
As you learn from other people, teach your culture or cultural values, too. One time, I brought a whole cooler of jollof to our company day with fried and stewed croaker fish. Then, I made a step-by-step guide for making the jollof for everyone. The food was a "banger"—most people opted to eat the jollof. That is teaching your culture. Do what works for you.
Learn the culture. It makes things easier.
