by Ray Ryan. A bright light went out yesterday in Irish sport and news journalism with the death after a brief illness of one of its best known practitioners — John A Murphy. The passing of the 71-year-old journalist from Western Bay, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, is mourned by his family and friends and by colleagues countrywide. Johnny Murphy, as he was known to all, was a sportswriter, news reporter and columnist with what is now the Irish Examiner, and its sister papers, the Evening Echo and the Waterford News and Star. His earthy personality and his ability to tell stories as well as write them also earned for him legendary status across a broad section of society. A gifted wordsmith, his articulate analysis of GAA games particularly hurling, also meant that he was a regular contributor to radio programmes, especially on WLR. In many respects, he was one of the last of a generation of all-round journalists that could record court cases in the morning, report on local authority meetings in the afternoon, write a column that night with fluency of style and cover GAA matches at the weekend. As a sportswriter, Johnny Murphy was respected not just by colleagues but also the wider GAA family. Last year, he was greatly touched when the Gaelic Writers Association presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also honoured by the Munster GAA Council. A past Waterford County GAA Board chairman, he was a former Fianna Fáil member of Dungarvan Urban Council and a staunch member of the National Union of Journalists. A native of Cashel, Co Tipperary, he started his career with the Dungarvan Observer and joined the then The Cork Examiner in 1969 as a news reporter for West Waterford and East Cork. The kidnapping of Lord and Lady Donoughmore in Clonmel, the arrest of the Claudia gun running ship off the Waterford coast, and the Dungarvan Aids scare were among the major stories he covered. He was also deeply committed to the welfare of his community. In recent years, he was accorded a joint civic reception by Waterford County Council and Dungarvan Urban Council, was presented with a Service to the Community Award in West Waterford by Regional Media and was surprised with a “This is Your Life” celebration in Dungarvan. He retired from the Irish Examiner in 2006 but continued writing about GAA games for that and various other publications. Expressing his condolences to Johnny’s wife Eileen and daughters, Irish Examiner editor Tim Vaughan said they will be comforted by a huge wave of sympathy from the many thousands of people who ever had anything to do with him.

“It’s a bit of a cliche, but Johnny was something special; a great all-round journalist totally dedicated to his job, very, very funny and with a great attitude to life,” Mr Vaughan said. Johnny Murphy will be remembered with fondness by a legion of people, all of whom he regarded as his “close personal friends”, and whose lives he brightened over the years with stories and anecdotes. As they sympathised yesterday with his wife Eileen, his four daughters Jackie, Sharon, Deirdre and Claire and his extended family, they were all at one in saying: “Ni fheicimid a leitheid ann aris — we will never see his likes again.”

MUNSTER LGFA JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL

ARRAVALE ADVANCE TO SEMI FINALS

ARRAVALE ROVERS 4=9 DUNGARVAN 1=4.

FOLLOWING their recent 2=12 to 2=6 win over Lattin in the Tipperary
championship final, Arravale Rovers set down a marker for the
Provincial championship with a well deserved win over Dungarvan away
from home on Friday evening.

A brace of goals in the first six minutes by Sophia O Grady and Ciara
O Hora set the winners on their way and these were early blows that a
game home side could never recover from.

Player of the Match, O Hora and Sarah Ryan added points from play by
the 17th minute and when Sarah Duggan lobbed home a third
goal one minute later, there was no way back for the home team.

Constantly under pressure, Dungarvan defended as best they could to
deny the winners further scores and Sarah Lacy opened their account
at the end of a good team move in the 20th minute.

Dungarvan enjoyed more possession as the half progressed but it was
Arravale who finished the first half scoring per Sarah Ryan with the
second of her 0=4 on the night.

Arravale had one first half wide to Dungarvan’s three and they won
three frees, two less than their opposition.

SECOND HALF

Dungarvan started the second half well with a pointed free by Ciara
Hurley before Molly Price and Sarah Ryan replied for the winners.

Even the most ardent of Arravale supporters would have to acknowledge
that the best score of the game was executed by Dungarvan’s Lucie O
Shea when she gained possession in midfield and wormed her way past a
litany of defenders before placing the ball in the bottom right hand
corner of the Arravale net.

It was the only real moment of joy for the home side as the winners
replied with their fourth major score, three minutes later per Ciara O
Hora’s second goal, 4=5 to 1=2.

Arravale won the final quarter by 0=4 to 0=2 with Sarah Ryan, Ciara O
Hora, Molly Price and a pointed free by O Hora completing their
impressive display.

Reagan Keohane and Shauna Coakley scored in the last ten minutes for
the home side but overall they had to give way to a more experienced
side, who were very obviously very used to playing with each other and
whose progress in this Munster championship will be interesting.

DUNGARVAN GAA EXTENDS ITS FACILITIES IN CLUB GROUINDS

Officially opened in 1994, the Dungarvan club adds a further important facility at its club grounds following previous recently additions such as a stand, an astro turf facility and an electronic scoreboard, the latter courtesy of the generosity of neighbours, Cappoquin Logistics.

A new state of the art Gymnasium, made possible by a Sports grant and built by Tom Morrissey and Co will be officially opened by Waterford senior hurling manager Stephen Molomphy at 12 noon on this Saturday October 17th.

JJ KAVANAGH AND SONS COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL

BALLINACOURTY CLEAR CUT WINNERS AGAINST AN RINN

BALLINACOURTY 2=13 AN RINN 1=4

Ballinacourty proved to be trap to line winners of this SFC quarter final local derby at a rain and wind swept Fraher Field on Sunday afternoon.

From their first point by the hard working Sean Whelan Barrett in the first minute and a follow up fi**ed point by Seanie Callaghan, gale assisted ‘Courty were well on top and the scores regularly followed.

Brian Looby had a great game in the colours and his journeys into the An Rinn defence paid dividends as early as the 6th minute when he was taken down in front of the country end goal and Aaron Beresford made no mistake with the resulting penalty, 1=2 to 0=0.

Unfortunately for the An Rinn camp, the 0=0 was a regular feature of their game and with 50 minutes played, the record books and the AI man were being checked to see when was the last time a team did not score in the Waterford SFC.

In County finals, the last time such an occurrence featured was in 1946 when Dungarvan beat Kilrossanty by 3=2 to 0=0. Before that in 1932, Fenor defeated Brickeys by 3=5 to 0=0 but whether a 0=00 scoreline happened in games leading up to County finals is a matter for further research.

Balliancourty continued to work the scoreboard during the first half in the Fraher Field with points from -play by Brian Looby, Daire Slevin, Willie Beresford and a contender for score of the match by Daithi Brunnock, 1=6 to 0=0.

The game was ended as a contest in the 23rd minute when Seanie Callaghan scored a goal off the ground which would have done justice to the Man City v Liverpool game later in the evening.
Brian Looby kicked his second point from play in the 24th minute and when Aaron Beresford kicked the first of his two pointed frees with the game in added time, Ballinacourty were in a real comfort zone on a scoreboard reading 2=8 to 0=0.

Ballinacourty had four first half wides to An Rinn’s one and they won eight frees, one less than An Rinn.

SECOND HALF

The attendance was hoping for an An Rinn resurgence on the restart with the elements at their back but it was Ballinacourty who continued to dominant. Aaron Beresford was wide with a free attempt and Seanie Callaghan likewise with a fi**ed effort.
Beresford opened the scoring in the 36th minute and four minutes later Daithi Brunnock placed the pacy Seanie Callaghan for his second pointed free as the score board continued to torment the An Rinn camp, reading 2=10 to 0=0.

Both teams had goal scoring chances before the end of the third quarter, Oisin O Ceallaigh for An Rinn and Michael Kiely for Ballinacourty. It just wasn’t An Rinn’s day overall as they also lost Ray and Oisin O Ceallaigh to injuries while Ballinacourty had the luxury of resting Seanie Callaghan, Michael O Halloran and Sean Whelan Barrett ahead of the semi final this Sunday.

An Aaron Beresford score from play, a second score by Willie Morrissey and a second also by Daithi Brunnock, who is settling well into the side, read 2=13 to 0=0 with 52 minutes played.

There would be long odds on An Rinn winning the second half alone with eight minutes of normal time remaining but they did so. Half time sub Donie Breathnach opened his team’s account in the 55th minute with a two pointer free, another sub, Fearghal O Cuirrin followed with a two pointer from play and Donie Breathnach converted a 61st minute penalty.

This quick sequence of scores saw An Rinn win the half by 1=4 to 0=5, something that looked to be completely impossible during the course of the game. An Rinn’s list of injuries are well known all year and so they will be happy to have retained their senior status in an eight team championship and also qualifying for the knockout stages.

Ballinacourty looked good on Sunday and this weekend’s game v The Nire will be a game that they can look forward to with more confidence than hope. If they can produce their best form and get Conor Prunty back on to the field, they can return to a County final for the first time in just two years.

GAULTIER MAKE BETTER USE OF THE GALE

GAULTIER 0=10 STRADBALLY 0=5

Both senior football championship quarter finals at the Fraher Field on Sunday were spoiled by the terrible weather conditions with strong wind and rain driving into the country end goal.
Gaultier had first use of it but after they opened the scoring in the 2nd minute per Sean White, they didn’t score again until the 25th minute. The main reason was the excellent play against the conditions by Stradbally and their prospects looked good at this stage with the half nearing completion.

However, they tired somewhat due to their efforts and Gaultier added 0=5 before the break with Stradbally not registering any score at all.

Dessie Hutchinson kicked a left legged 25th minute point, sub Darragh O Keeffe placed Mark Fitzgerald for a 26th minute two pointer, Hutchinson was on target again one minute later and older brother, JJ,(f). finished the first half scoring in the 29th minute.
Gaultier kicked eight first half wides to Stradbally’s one and they won half a dozen frees to their opponents’ eight.

SECOND HALF

Gaultier proved their superiority on the restart though Stradbally won this half by 0=5 to 0=4. JJ Fitzgerald pointed from a Mark Fitzgerald pass in the 35th minute and, while Stradbally were creating scoring opportunities, they were not registering on the board.

The best score of the game was a curling point by Mark Fitzgerald from a Dessie Hutchinson pass in the 39th minute before Jack Mullaney eventually opened Stradbally’s account with 43 minutes on the clock, 0=8 to 0=1.

Four minutes later, Michael O Brien found his range from two pointers but a number of wides didn’t realise any more much needed scores in the next ten minutes.

Instead, it was Gaultier who secured valuable scores into the town end. Sub Sean Cullinane was on target in the 54th minute as wa JJ Hutchinson two minutes later to consolidate Gaultier’s position and send them into the semi final v County champions, Rathgormack, 0=10 to 0=3.

Michael O Brien kicked a second two pointer free on 56 minutes but it came too late to divert the game in Stradbally’s favour.
Gaultier were deserving winner, led by Aaron Jones and Tommy Martin in defence, Mark Fitzgerald was a key player throughout at midfield and he scored 0=2 from play and the Hutchinsons contribute half of the team’s scoring tally.

Stradbally’s best player was the ever improving Cormac McGrath i lar na pairce with Nicky Power ultra dependable between the posts and keeping a clean sheet. Thr injured Liam Fennell was a huge loss on the day, Pa Skehan produced his best game in the jersey and young Aaron Curran showed that he is learning his trade well at senior level.

The Covesiders will be disappointed to exit at this stage but overall they retained their status in the grade and their thrilling win over Kilrossanty in the previous round will provide much comfort over the winter months.

RADLEY ENGINEERING WESTERN INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL.
LIGHTS OUT... GAME
ABANDONED (AFTER 50 MINUTES)

SLIABH GCUA 1=5 SHAMROCKS 1=4.
ALL of a sudden the Dungarvan dusk descended on the Fraher Field on
Saturday evening when the lights went out in this Western IFC semi
final which was very closely played out by Sliabh gCua and last
year’s County junior champions, Shamrocks.
At this stage, Sliabh gCua looked the likely winners. Jason Sheehan,
their full forward, was in top form and, one felt, that if he got
enough of the ball he could win the game on his own. That said, he had
some wides as well from scoreable positions which could have proved
costly at the end of the day.
This was a most unusual game and a potentially very dangerous one as
well. The standard of football was poor but the pace of the game and
players running here, there and everywhere resulted in some reckless
tackles as the game developed and two horrifying head injuries. In
fact, the latter led some supporters to believe that the game would be
called off earlier than what it was as the clatter of two heads in a
deadly collision was heard all, over the venue.
In truth, we are miles behind in the care of such injuries. In rugby,
players who receive head injuries have to leave the field for
assessment . We don’t have this, either mandatory leaving the field
and some one to assess, and it was pushing the boat out to let both
players involved in the collision at the Shandon venue to continue.
Whose to say that these players were fit to continue? With a cut, the
damage is known, with head injuries it isn’t visible and if either or
both players’ well being deteriorated later, only then maybe this type
of incident will be addressed. It was just as well that the game
didn’t finish, the decision made by a generator malfunction.
This was a real even game on the scoreboard. The team were level at
0=3 each after 22 minutes and at half time at 1=3 each. Jason Sheehan
and Dave Bennett traded pointed frees by the 9th minute before
Sheehan’s first point from play went over off the cross bar.
Shamrocks were in the lead by the 19th minute after two pointed frees
by Billy Hynes, the second the result of the new infamous midfield ‘
breach’. Hynes also had a two pointer free hit the post and Jason
Sheehan similarly from an ordinary free before the latter levelled
from a placed ball on 22 minutes.
Sheehan also had a goal chance denied but at the other end in the 25th
minute, Shamrocks netted when Billy Hynes’ right legged goal attempt
was stopped by David Whelan only for the inrushing Kieran Crawford to
finish to the net.
The final score of the half was also a goal and it arrived from the
penalty spot in the first minute of added time. Jason Sheehan
continued to be the only scorer for the Touraneena side when he
finished in style to the net, 1=3 each at the break.
Sliabh gCua had three first half wides to Shamrocks’ one and they won
ten frees, double that of the Shamrocks.
SECOND HALF
The curtailed second half began with two Jason Sheehan wides before
David Barrett opened the scoring after all of twelve minutes with his
second pointed free for Shamrocks, their final score on the night.
The tackles were becoming more reckless from this stage onwards while
before the game was halted, Slaiabh gCua had levelled in the 45th
minute courtesy of a Kevin Sheehan hand finished point followed by a
pointed free by younger brother Jason three minutes later, 1=5 to 1=4.
Two minutes later, the match became a game of statues when the lights
failed. On such an occasion, to finish the game on the night, the
availability of another venue nearby organised before hand in such an
eventuality may be worth exploring as has happened on a few occasions
in the past.
As it is, the game will be refixed according to rule before
Ballinacourty’s opponents in this year’s decider will be known. Might
be no harm to play it in daylight hours.

EDWARD O ROURKE CONTRACTING WESTERN JUNIOR ‘A’ FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL
DUNGARVAN RETURN TO DIVISIONAL FINAL
DUNGARVAN 2=11 BALLYDUFF 1=8
Defeated finalists last year to Shamrocks, Dungarvan have made an immediate return to the Western Junior ‘A’ football final after a deserving 0=6 win over Ballyduff at the Fraher Field on Saturday afternoon.
Like many of the big ball games over the weekend, this was an average affair with just 0=8 scored in total in the first half between both teams. Dungarvan always looked the better side but they faded in the final quarter and for a short while it looked as if Ballyduff could make a bid for a win on the day.
Dungarvan had first use of the wind but there was no scoring for all of nine minutes until Luke Power pointed the winners in front from a placed ball. Ballyduff replied well with a brace from play per midfielder Sean Hickey and Cathal Murphy and the reds led at the end of the first quarter at 0=2 to 0=1.
Dungarvan had a goal chance per Pierce Quann in the 17th minute but they had to wait another three minutes for their first score from play. Luke Power pointed his second free in the 17th minute before full forward Charlie Crotty pointed Dungarvan into the lead.
Eoin O Callaghan had a second Dungarvan goal chance in the 22nd minute before Tireoghain Flynn, the game’s top scorer kicked Ballyduff’s final point of the half from a free one minute later, 0=3 each.
Dungarvan finished the half stronger with the efficient Ryan McGovern pointing at the end of normal time and Charlie Crotty finishing a well worked move with his second point from play. Dungarvan kicked four first half wides to Ballyduff’s two and they won nine frees, three less than their opponents.
SECOND HALF.
Dungarvan secured their win in the third quarter which they won by 2=5 to 0=0. The introduction of Joe Duggan and Jacob Dalton made all the difference on the scoreboard and in general play. Luke Power had a goal effort denied at the expense of a point before a well worked move resulted in Pierce Quann scoring the first goal of the game on 33 minutes.
Charlie Crotty kicked his third point from play before Ryan McGovern placed Joe Duggan for the first of his two scores, 1=8 to 0=3. Charlie Crotty(f) and Jack Lacey increased Dungarvan’s lead before Pierce Quann and Jacob Dalton combined for a great goal by the latter in the country end, 2=10 to 0=3 and 45 minutes played.
Dingarvan held sway in this game up to this stage with Johnny Burke’s high fielding in midfield a feature of the game. However, he drifted back in defence for the final quarter and Ballyduff came thundering into the game.
The Reds won the final quarter by 1=5 to 0=3 with sub Mikey Kearney pointing from play in the 46th minute followed by a Seamus Hannon pointed free two minutes later, 1=10 to 0=5.
Joe Duggan produced the score of the match in the 49th minute, Dungarvan’s final visit to the scoreboard before Ballyduff dominated the rest of the game.
Tireoghain Flynn pointed a two pointer free in the 50th minute and was wide with a similar effort two minutes later. Seamus Hannon pointed his second free in the 55th minute and though Tireoghain Flynn’s injury time goal was a consolation for Ballyduff, it showed that a repeat lapse by the winners in the Divisional final can prove costly for them for the second year in a row.
Best for Dungarvan were man of the match Johnny Burke, Charlie Crotty, Jack Lacey, Eddie Burke, Pierce Quann, James Maye, Ryan McGovern and their subs Joe Duggan and Jacob Dalton.
For Ballyduff, Tireoghain Flynn was the game’s top scorer and he was well supported by Gavin Kenneally, Sean Hickey and Cathal Murphy but they couldn’t repeat their excellent quarter final display on this occasion.

PREMIER INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL

MOMENTUM GATHERING MODELIGO ADVANCE TO SEMI FINALS

MODELIGO 3=13 ST. SAVIOURS 2=10

THE troops continue to return from injury for Modeligo and it showed
what they can do with a full compliment of players as they deservingly
advanced to the Premier IFC semi finals with a dseserving win over St.
Saviours in Lemybrien on Saturday.
The winners led by 3=13 to 2=5 with 52 minutes played and it was the
introduction of former County player Darragh Corcoran by Saviours that
led a late revival for the Ballybeg side to reduce their hefty deficit
by practically half.
Saviours got the ideal start to the match with a goal by Daniel Byrne
from an Aaron Jacob pass in the very first play. James Walsh, who
finished the game’s top scorer, opened Modeligo’s account in the 3rd
minute and Niall Dalton then supplied for Michael Whelan to finish to
the dressing room end goal and the winners were never led thereafter.
Gus Nugent, who was one of the main leaders on the field operating i
lar na pairce, dissected the posts for Modeligo and they could have
had a second goal before James Walsh, with a hint of too many steps,
popped over his first two pointer, 1=4 to 1=0 in the 10th minute.
Martin Holohan and Aaron Jacob pointed either side of a superbly taken
free from an angle by James Walsh and when Jacob finished a long
delivery to the net, the teams were level at 2=2 to 1=5 with 17
minutes on the clock,
James Walsh was left very loose throughout the half and he punished
Saviours again with his second two pointer from play. After Luke
English pointed a Saviour’s 21st minute free, they were reduced
numerically for the rest of the half when their centre back Glen
Taylor picked up a black card for a foul on Walsh.
Saviours were not punished too much in his absence before the break
with Modeligo adding just two more scores per James Walsh and Gus
Hickey to take a 0=2 lead into the dressing rooms at 1=9 to 2=3.
Both teams kicked three first half wides each with Saviours winning
double the amount of frees than Modeligo, eight to four.
SECOND HALF
Modeligo secured their place in the semi finals with a dominant third
quarter display at end of which they led by 3=10 to 2=5. The
introduction of the experienced Rian Reddy at the break yielded goals
in the 36th and the 44th minutes. The second one was particularly
impressive with Bernard Wright and Gus Nugent involved in the build up
to it.
Saviors lost their discipline somewhat in that quarter and it
shortened their later comeback which surfaced too late to bring this
game down to the wire. Aaron Jacob pointed a lovely two pointer in
the 46th minute but James Walsh and a Bernard Wright pointed free
negated this inside two minutes, 3=12 to 2=5.
Though St. Saviors picked up a second black card in the 50th minute,
Modeligo scored just one more point for the remaining time and this
was a David Hickey score as early as 52 minutes.
True to tradition, Saviours commendably finished strongly. Luke
English kicked a 54th minute two pointer, and followed with a pointed
free three minutes later, 3=13 to 2=8. Darragh Corcoran pointed twice
from play but time ran out for their comeback and Modeligo deservingly
prevailed by 0=6 come the final whistle.
Saviours remain safe in the grade for 2027 and Modeligo can now look
forward to a semi final game this weekend with game time behind Rian
Reddy and Jamie Power and James Hickey ready to come back to the field
of play.
