Clare Outdoor Club Our activites include hillwalking, climbing, caving , kayaking and other outdoor pursuits. www.clareoutdoorclub.net We would be delighted to hear from you.

Clare Outdoor Club was founded in 1985 by a local group of outdoor enthusiasts. Along with hillwalking and rockclimbing our members have diverse interests such as kayaking, cycling, surfing, caving, sailing, running, etc. Based in Ennis, our calendar of walks from September to June takes us to the mountains of Kerry, Galway, Mayo, Tipperary and Waterford with occasional walks closer to home in Co Clare and Co Limerick. Throughout the year we have weekends away in Ireland and abroad. The club is fortunate to have a large number of experienced leaders and members are encouraged to participate in training programmes such as Mountain Skills, Mountain Leader, and First Aid. We welcome new members, however be aware that our emphasis is on hill walks rather than low level rambles. You will find further information and advice on our website. If you would like to join the club or get in touch with us, please send an email.

Another beautiful clear calm day in the hills of Mayo on Sunday. Six walkers enjoyed the Croagh Patrick traverse, led by James McTigue. The group started off from the car park in Murrisk, initially following the Pilgrimage Path, then diverting onto the Heritage trail to reach the Deerpark Wall at the eastern end of the ridge. A stiff ascent took the walkers onto the eastern end of the ridge, to traverse Crott Mountain, Teevencroaghy and Lugnademon before descending to rejoin the Pilgrimage Path to eventually reach the summit of Croagh Patrick. Descending from Croagh Patrick toward the western end of the ridge the walk took in the two peaks of Ben Goram before descending to finish the walk in the townland of Kilsallagh.

Bright sunshine and clear skies afforded spectacular views of Clew Bay with its many islands and beyond to the Nephin Mountains and Achill Island. To the west Clare Island loomed large with Inishturk just visible further south. Inland, the hills and mountains, and rugged and beautiful landscape of southwest Mayo.

On Saturday, a beautiful calm sunny October day, seventeen walkers enjoyed a new route for the club in the Partry Mountains/Joyce Country. Led by Bryan McCabe and Fiona Mangan, the group followed the river up the majestic Srahnalong valley, before pulling onto the high plateau to the Maumtrasna trig pillar. The descent was via the broad rocky An Scoltach ridge to the west, where we spotted a golden plover. Everyone was treated to excellent views of the Connemara and Mayo mountains, as well as Lough Mask, Lough Corrib and Lough Nafooey.

The Western Bens was the destination for the second hike of the weekend on Sunday, with a group of eleven setting off to explore some of the area’s less-frequented peaks. The route took us over Maumonght, Bencullagh and Muckanaght, offering a rewarding day of hillwalking through this beautiful part of Connemara. Although the wind was fresh on the higher ground, the weather thankfully stayed dry, allowing us to enjoy some fantastic panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and landscape.

A great day out in the hills, made all the more enjoyable by the company along the way. Many thanks to Aoife Fallon and James McTigue for leading such an enjoyable hike!

A double header of club walks this weekend!

The first (Saturday) was another fantastic day out, with 22 of us taking on Mullaghmore and Lough Avalla. 😊🥾

We were blessed with glorious weather, apart from the odd shower, and enjoyed fabulous views across the Burren throughout the day.

Great to see such a big turnout, especially so many new members joining us. Plenty of chats and laughs along the way, and a lovely day spent exploring this beautiful part of Clare.

Thanks to our walk leaders Dave Dravniece and Fiona Mangan and everyone who came along. Looking forward to seeing our new members out on the hills again soon! 😊🥾

Today’s strenuous hillwalk, led by Peter O’Shea, was to the lofty peak of Cruach Mhór, Ireland’s 11th highest mountain and the formidable gatekeeper to Eastern Reeks. The summit is marked by a stone grotto built in 1954 by a local farmer with materials hauled up by hand. Today’s weather was changeable and the 850m of total ascent was steep but the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all 14 participants.

The first walk of the new season took place yesterday in the 12 O'Clock Hills, covering 13km of beautiful East Clare countryside. We had a great turnout with several new members who joined us for their very first hike with the club. The weather was perfect and the views of East Clare were stunning. Our leader Connie O’Halloran kept us on track and gave new members a great insight into the club. Andrew Killeen advised on clothing and boots and how to prepare for different weather conditions and scenarios. The new members blended in seamlessly and we had lovely chats and funny stories along the way. Thank you Connie and Andrew for another great day out.

Hiking With Your Phone 📱🥾

Yesterday, the "Hiking With Your Phone" course was run for Clare Outdoor Club members, giving everyone a great opportunity to learn and develop their navigation skills using their phones.

Today, some of our walking leaders took part. The morning was spent indoors learning valuable navigation and safety skills, followed by an afternoon putting those skills into practice in the beautiful Burren.

There was also plenty of good humour along the way, with some participants still trying to figure out the difference between a bull and a cow while out hiking and employing a few diversionary tactics to avoid getting too close! 🐂🐄😂

As always, Eilish brought her continuing run of good luck with the weather. Once again, we were treated to glorious conditions. At this stage, she’s becoming known as the club’s very own weather good-luck charm — even if she was fashionably late for the start of the course and made a grand entrance when she arrived! ☀️😄

A big thank you to Jim McHale for sharing his knowledge, experience and practical tips throughout the day. A great couple of days of learning, laughs and improving our skills on the hills.

Last night we held our Annual General Meeting (AGM), where the activities and achievements of the past year were reviewed and discussed. Members reflected on a successful year for the club, including walks, social events, training activities, and club development.

The election of officers also took place, and we would like to thank the outgoing committee members for their dedication and hard work over the past year.

Following the AGM, members enjoyed a wonderful BBQ and social evening at the Copper Jug, Ennis. There was a great spread of delicious food, and it was a wonderful opportunity to relax, catch up with friends, and celebrate another successful year for the Clare Outdoor Club.

A special thank you to Eilish Corbett for organising the evening and the BBQ. Her hard work and attention to detail ensured a very enjoyable event for everyone who attended.

Thank you to all members who came along and helped make the evening such a success. We look forward to another great year of walking, adventure, and friendship in the Clare Outdoor Club. 😊
