Well done to our club players who played in the Munster Wallball Championship Finals in Conna , Co. Cork yesterday. Brothers Conor and Cathal Murnane played their debut championship in U14 and U16 singles. They did really well , no doubt gaining some valuable experience and knowledge for the future. Leanne O'Brien was our sole female in action and again she flew the flag valiantly for the club , playing solidly but eventually losing out to a strong Tipperary opponent. JP O'Connor enjoyed great success , dominating the Masters grade and bringing home the title. But pride of place certainly lies with Colin Quish who put in several stellar performances to capture the JB singles title at just 18 years of age. In the final he played a flawless opening game winning 15-0 with a display of precision, athleticism , skill and power, which demanded the attention of the entire crowd. His opponent was a quality player though and he opened a big lead in the second. Seeds of doubt could have crept in but Colin pushed on again and roared back into the game . He lost out 12-15 in the second and so the dreaded tie breaker to 11 was to decide the title. Opening exchanges were tight with no quarter given but Colin's quality and no shortage of grit was beginning to shine through. He started to dominate again with some awesome power and skill , clinching the title 11-5. It was a tremendous display from a young man with a bright future. Many thanks to hosts Conna Handball Club who were the perfect hosts once again. Both JP and Colin will be in action in the All Ireland series in Roscommon at the end of the month. Well done to all.

Paul Russell Memorial Tournament Finals 2025
The Paul Russell Memorial Tournament came to a conclusion on Saturday night at Hospital Handball Club , with both the Plate Final and the coveted Cup Final up for grabs.
The action began at 6pm with locals John Penny and Mike O'Brien facing MichΓ©al Reidy and Stephen Shanahan of Broadford , in the Plate decided.
The Broadford men were out of the blocks quickly taking a 6 point lead early on. The Hospital lads settled but never closed the gap and dropped the first game 15-9.
The second game seesawed over and back with both teams exchanging the lead on several occasions. It was Penny & O'Brien who secured the decisive last two points to take the second 15-13 and ensure a deciding third game was required.
The 3rd game was predominantly one way traffic with the Hospital men finally getting back in to serve staring down a 14-1 deficit. To their credit they caught valiantly but eventually lost out 15-7.
It was a nice warm up for the epic game which was to follow in the blue riband Cup Final.
Keith Heelan & John Keyes raced out of the blocks into a 9-0 lead against brothers JP & Mike O'Connor, with a huge statement of intent. Some great killshots from John Keyes and super serving from Keith kept the siblings on the backfoot throughout the first game. At 19-5 in the first it looked a foregone conclusion but the O'Connors kept battling eventually losing out 21-13.
They second game was to ebb and flow with all 4 players playing solid handball . Heelan and Keyes pushed on again nearing the end of the second game and were looking to be putting their name on the cup once again , leading 17-12. The O'Connor brothers fought back though with JP beginning to find his range and has a greater influence in the game. They duly took the second 21-19 much to the delight of the packed gallery.
JP and Mike were the ones quickly out of the blocks in game 3. They shot out to a 6-1 lead and looked to be in control. Keith and John had a strong 20 min surge then and looked to have an unassailable lead at 17-9 deep into the third game.
The O'Connor brothers rose their game once more thought and with some excellent serving from Mike, JP began to dictate the flow of the game and following a string of killshots in a row the tension was palpable. Keith and John regained the serve once more at 17-16 and pushed on to 19 before being taken out again. The pattern continued, Mike with top serves , JP hitting winners , and the O'Connor siblings took the honours 21-19 and were duly crowned Paul Russell Memorial Cup Champions for 2025. It was an epic game lasting over 2 hours. Mike and Kenneth Russell presented the cup to the winning brothers after the game , with several more of the Russell family in attendance delighted with the entertainment on show from both games. Until the next time, over and out......

Selection of photos from the Paul Russell Memorial Tournament and finals day from down through the years. Some great pictures and memories. Sadly some of those pictured are no longer with us but their spirit remains. Some great players have played in the tournament throughout the years with many major titles such as intermediate , Masters A , and Senior champions, having cut their teeth as such, in the tournament . Another great evening is promised tomorrow with the action beginning at 6pm
