It was heartbreak in Ardclough on Saturday afternoon as our U14 girls bowed out at the Division 1 semi-final stage against a familiar foe in Leixlip. While the result didn't go our way, the performance was one of immense pride and character.
The game started as many expected a semi-final would cagey, tense, and fiercely contested. Both sides worked hard early on, with space hard to come by. However, our girls really found their rhythm in the second quarter. Stepping up the intensity, moving the ball brilliantly, and working tirelessly all over the pitch, we took control of the contest and were rewarded with a well-deserved lead heading into the half-time break.
To Leixlip’s credit, they came out firing for the second half with all guns blazing. They seized the momentum early, overturned the deficit, and once they got their noses in front, they never looked back.
With time ticking away, our girls refused to go down without a fight and they threw everything forward in a ferocious late onslaught. Wave after wave of pressure was launched at the Leixlip goal, but the visitors' defence stood remarkably resolute, putting their bodies on the line to keep us at bay and an excellent save from their keeper. Despite our relentless efforts, we just couldn't find the breakthrough scores needed to turn the tide.
While it wasn't our day, every single girl who took to the pitch can hold their head high. They did themselves, their management, and their supporters incredibly proud, battling with heart right up to the final whistle.
A massive congratulations to a smashing Leixlip team on a hard-earned victory, and we wish them the very best of luck in the Division 1 final!
