LGFA u16 Div 2 Championship

Leixlip 1 started their U16 Division 2 championship campaign with an impressive win away to Kill on Thursday August 27th.

The heavy rain before and throughout the game made for tricky playing conditions, but even that couldn't dampen the Leixlip players performance. The work rate all over the pitch and even when well on top on the scoreboard, showing a desire to win possession, was the platform for this opening round win.

Some great support and link play allowed Leixlip to create and convert lots of scores and run out deserving winners. They now look forward to the round 2 clash v Castlemitchell at home on Thursday Sept 3rd.

Leixlip v Kilcock

Tuesday 25th August

Leixlip travelled to Kilcock on Tuesday night knowing that a win would secure a home quarter-final. Played in continuous rain, the difficult conditions made ball retention and scoring challenging, with both defences on top and scoring chances at a premium.

Leixlip opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but Kilcock responded with some excellent scores. The sides exchanged scores before Leixlip found the net through Sarah Bradley, who finished off a fine move following excellent work from Aisling McCarthy, Maria Moolick and Aoibhe Kelly. Moolick then added a second goal from close range to leave Leixlip 2.04 to 0.03 ahead at half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with both defences again to the fore. Kilcock pressed hard to reduce the deficit, but some excellent Leixlip defending, combined with a number of missed chances, kept them at bay.

Leixlip finished strongly, scoring 1.02 without reply, with Ava Coburn finding the net in the 55th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

While the final scoreline suggests a comfortable victory for Leixlip, the game was anything but. Kilcock battled right to the final whistle, but Leixlip took their chances at crucial moments to secure an important win.

The victory sets up a mouth-watering quarter-final against near neighbours Confey, with the game taking place at home on Radley on the 8th of September.

Final Score: Leixlip 3.09 – Kilcock 0.09

LGFA Fixtures

U16s kick off their championship this Thursday.

Leixlip senior footballers overcame local rivals Confey in round 2 of the intermediate championship in Clane on Saturday afternoon last on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-11.

In a game where Leixlip had to win to be in with a chance of a 1/4 final spot, they brought great energy from the word go creating plenty of scoring opportunities and went in and half time leading by 4 points.

The 2nd half was nip and tuck until Leixlip got their first goal and then the scores flowed leading to a 9 point victory.

All teams in the group have 2 points going into the final round of games on Friday week where Leixlip play Straffan in Hawkfield at 8.
The winners in each of the remaining games go straight into the 1/4 final.

The West Grove Hotel Reserve C Championship

Leixlip 3-12 v Raheens 3-13

Result & Report

The game took place on the Colaiste Chiaran pitch and as in keeping with the pitch, it tends to be a game of two halves.

Leixlip started well and kept the scoreboard ticking over giving the girls a healthy lead at the break by 2-8 v 0-4, albeit having played down the hill.

The second half began with Raheens scoring a number of quick points to bring the score back to within 2 after 10 mins. From that point both teams traded scores and with two minutes to go, Leixlip held a 5 point lead.

Two goals from Raheens, with one being the last kick of the game saw the Raheens girls on top by a point with the whistle going on the kickout.

It was a tough result in the end but as with any game like this, it was highly entertaining and exactly what both teams would’ve desired prior to the game to be as evenly matched as it was.

Well done to the Raheens girls on taking the result and with results in the group now known, the Leixlip girls have qualified for the quarter final of the championship away to Kill in two weeks time.

It’s a terrific result for the club to be only one of only three clubs in the county with three senior teams.
With all teams very competitive in their respective championships, a lot of credit must go to the LGFA setup in the club to have so many girls still playing quality football at this stage of the Senior Championships.
