Its a common misconception that the biggest cause of motorcycle crashes is speed but speed is only a factor from the motorcycle in 16% of cases.

Department for Transport data shows the most common contributory factor is ineffective observation and in 68% of those cases, it's the other road user, not the motorcyclist.

🎯 **What do a dart and a motorcycle have in common?**

Both have a small profile, and the human brain is surprisingly poor at spotting small objects travelling directly towards it. Even when drivers look they may not actually see you or judge your speed correctly.

That's why the safest mindset is to ride as though you haven't been seen.

🏍 Ease off the throttle approaching junctions.
🏍 Position yourself for the best view and escape route.
🏍 Cover your brakes.
🏍 If you're unsure you've been seen, use your horn.

If you use another vehicle look once, Looks twice and think bike.

Even the most highly trained riders and drivers, on blue lights, avoid overtaking at junctions, because it’s a highly risky manoeuvre that is absolutely fraught with danger.

So we have only one line of advice: don’t do it. Ever! Year after year, air ambulances are called out to motorcyclists killed at junctions and a far too common cause is that the rider was overtaking another vehicle through the junction itself. It’s simply not worth the cost.

Top Tip (and we make no apologies for repeating ourselves)

Don’t overtake at junctions. If blue-light riders don’t do it with their lights and sirens on, that’s a good enough reason for the rest of us not to do it either.

Across Munster, our volunteer team of RoSPA certified Advanced Motorcycle Tutors train Blood bikers and regular motorcyclists alike, in Roadcraft - the system used by police and emergency services in many countries.
