Our 2026 @journalismul research showcase highlighted outstanding new work by our students at all levels. Introducing the event, Head of Journalism Dr Fergal Quinn said journalism@ul staff “are committed to inculcating the importance of rigorous research practice both for academic and journalistic purposes. This includes the work you do in journalism to ensure accuracy, credibility and depth to reporting…. and it also encompasses the critical engagement with media output itself, where we question and interrogate the norms and practices of journalism work.” Presenters included MA 2025 graduate @paulm986 who gave an overview of his outstanding MA dissertation entitled “The shortening career-spans of elite professional footballers” which investigated outcomes of players playing more games earlier, and media discourses around PSR rules and homegrown players. @mark_halfham of the 2026 MAJ group, described his study on the relationship between the media and ‘performative masculinity’. Andrew Clair gave an overview of his brilliant FYP project which used AI powered data visualisation tools to map out patterns of bias and framing in online news presentation. @phillyharriis (4th year BAJ) presentation examined dynamics of arts and culture coverage in the media via his FYP practicum. Chris Benn (4th year) exhibited his in-depth investigation of development pathways in Irish rugby. Hanna @mcnallyyyyyy (second year BAJ) presented an overview of the publication of Debriefed magazine. @jessop_dylan (first year BAJ) presented his project on the rise in teenage gambling.
