Newcastle West Town B 6-2 St Ita’s Reserves

Reserves Show Fighting Spirit Despite Opening-Day Defeat

The St Ita’s Reserves travelled to Woodfield on a cool, crisp Sunday morning to take on Newcastle West Town B in their opening league fixture, with kick-off at 10:30am.

Newcastle West started brightly and dominated the early exchanges, with their pressure paying off in the 7th minute as Robert O’Brien found the net to give the home side an early lead. However, the Saints responded well and drew level in the 16th minute through a superb strike from Sean Ryan, who spotted the goalkeeper off his line and produced an excellent lob from distance.

St Ita’s grew into the game following the equaliser and created a couple of promising opportunities that could have seen them take the lead. However, Newcastle West continued to apply pressure and regained the advantage on the stroke of half-time through Michael O’Brien, a disappointing blow for the Saints after their hard work to get back into the contest.

The home side emerged from the break with renewed intensity and extended their lead just before the hour mark through Prince Moyo. Dean Quaid added a fourth in the 73rd minute, leaving the Saints with a mountain to climb.

To their credit, St Ita’s refused to give up. In the 77th minute, Sean Ryan turned provider with a beautifully delivered cross that was met by Darren Fitzgibbon, who powered a header home to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

With 13 minutes remaining, the Saints continued to push forward in search of another goal. Jason McCarthy came close with a well-struck effort that was expertly saved by the Newcastle West goalkeeper. However, as St Ita’s committed players forward, spaces began to open up at the back, and the home side took full advantage. Adam Shiels added a fifth before Robert O’Brien grabbed his second of the afternoon to complete the scoring.

Full-time: Newcastle West Town B 6-2 St Ita’s Reserves.

While the scoreline was disappointing, there were plenty of positives for the Saints to take from the performance. The team showed determination, created chances and continued to battle right to the final whistle. With performances improving week on week and more players returning to the fold, there is plenty of encouragement for the weeks ahead.
Onwards and upwards, Saints! 💙

Saints Stage Late Comeback to Secure Three Points Against Granagh

The Saints welcomed Granagh United to Ashford on a lovely, crisp morning for their latest league fixture, with the home side producing a fantastic late comeback to turn a one-goal deficit into a 3-1 victory.

St Ita’s almost got off to the perfect start in the opening minute when Callum Donoghue curled an effort towards goal, only for the ball to drift just wide of the far post. The early opportunity failed to spark either side into life, however, as both teams struggled to retain possession for any meaningful period, with much of the play taking place in the middle third.

Granagh registered the first effort on target in the 19th minute, but Ethan dealt comfortably with a tame shot. From his resulting kick-out, the Saints quickly moved up the pitch, allowing Alan Fitzpatrick to register Ita’s first effort on target, although his shot was straight at a relieved Aaron Deane in the Granagh goal.

As the half progressed, both sides began to create more opportunities. Granagh caused problems down the left flank, keeping the Saints’ defence busy, and one dangerous effort beat the advancing Ethan, only for Micheal Nolan to produce an excellent clearance to safety. At the other end, Callum was unlucky not to get on the end of a ball over the top just after the half-hour mark, with Deane getting there first. Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, and the teams went in level at 0-0.

Half-time: St Ita’s 0-0 Granagh United

Granagh started the second half brightly and tested the Saints’ defence early on, but a perfectly timed tackle from Eamon inside the penalty area s***fed out the danger. The respite was short-lived, though, as the visitors took the lead in the 47th minute.

A long free-kick from halfway was not dealt with by the Saints’ defence, allowing Colm Noonan to get a snap-shot away from the loose ball. Ethan produced an excellent reaction save, but Daniel Shelton was quickest to react, poking the rebound home from six yards to put Granagh 1-0 ahead.

The visitors’ celebrations were soon interrupted when, from another Granagh long free-kick, Alan Fitzpatrick nodded the ball into Oisin Collins, who returned it to Fitzpatrick, allowing him to release Damien Brouder through on goal. As Brouder approached the edge of the area, Conor Clifford brought him down, leaving referee Pat King with little option but to produce a red card.

With Granagh reduced to ten men, the Saints had an immediate opportunity to capitalise. Callum’s effort from the resulting free-kick whizzed narrowly past the outside of the post, before he tested Deane again in the 54th minute, forcing another save from the Granagh goalkeeper.

Despite being a man down, Granagh remained dangerous on the counterattack, and Ethan had to be quick off his line on the hour mark to s***f out a promising attack. A minute later, the Saints came agonisingly close to an equaliser. Micheal Nolan controlled a cross from the left and was about to pull the trigger when a Granagh defender got a toe to the ball, diverting it behind for a corner. Nolan came close again from the resulting set piece, but his header was cleared off the line.

Ciaran Dore, who had only recently entered the action, brought another fine save from Deane in the 62nd minute following good work down the left wing. The Saints were now piling on the pressure, and Oisin Collins delivered a dangerous cross in the 65th minute that was inches away from Callum’s outstretched foot.

Granagh’s final effort on target came in the 69th minute when an indirect free-kick was awarded on the edge of the Saints’ penalty area for dissent. Ethan was equal to the challenge, making another good save before quickly releasing Callum on the counterattack. His first attempt was blocked by a desperate sliding challenge from Colm Noonan, while his second required another smart save from Deane.

The equaliser felt increasingly inevitable, and it finally arrived in the 80th minute. Alan Fitzpatrick showed great strength to outmuscle his marker on the right-hand byline before delivering a perfect cross into the area. Callum met it with a deft side-footed finish, leaving Deane with no chance and bringing the Saints deservedly level.

As the old saying goes, goals are like buses: you can wait ages for one, and then two arrive almost together. Just three minutes after drawing level, the Saints completed the turnaround to take the lead. Daragh Lane made excellent progress from left-back before delivering a superb cross along the 18-yard line. Alan Fitzpatrick arrived to stroke the ball home, and although Deane managed to get his fingertips to the effort, the power behind the shot ensured the ball found the net.

With Granagh now chasing the game, the Saints put the result beyond doubt three minutes later. Damien Brouder launched a free-kick from halfway, which Ciaran Dore knocked back across the area towards the far post. William Quaid was waiting to meet it, and his looping effort sailed beyond the desperate dive of Deane to make it 3-1.

Granagh managed one final attempt to threaten the Saints’ goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but Jack Breenan rose well to head the ball behind to safety, ensuring the visitors had no late way back into the contest.

From trailing midway through the second half to scoring three unanswered goals in the closing stages, the Saints showed tremendous character, patience and determination to secure all three points. With Granagh down to ten men, St Ita’s made their numerical advantage count, continuing to press until the breakthrough came and then finishing the game strongly.

Full-time: St Ita’s 3-1 Granagh United

⚽ Scorers: Callum Donoghue, Alan Fitzpatrick, William Quaid

Division One League Cup – Group B

St Ita’s A v Athea Utd A

St Ita’s A welcomed Athea United A to Ashford on Sunday morning for their latest Division One League Cup Group B fixture.

The A’s took to the field with just 11 players available and no substitutes, such were the numbers available. The second goalkeeper was even required to make up the matchday squad, highlighting the challenges facing the Saints before kick-off.

Athea settled quicker and took the lead after 10 minutes through Mikey Nolan. However, the Saints responded well and were back on level terms on 20 minutes, with Paul Fitzmaurice continuing his excellent goalscoring form from last season.

New signing Oisin Collins then put the Saints in front just five minutes later, before turning provider three minutes after that, setting up Fitzmaurice for his second of the morning to give Ita’s a two-goal cushion.

Athea remained dangerous going forward, and Nolan grabbed his second of the half to reduce the deficit. Alan Fitzpatrick, returning to the club this season, restored the Saints’ two-goal advantage with five minutes remaining in the half. There was still time for the visitors to find the net again before the break, leaving just one goal between the sides after a breathless opening 45 minutes.

Half-time: St Ita’s A 4–3 Athea Utd A

The second half couldn’t quite match the excitement of the first, with the tempo dropping slightly as both sides continued to create opportunities.

The Saints’ task became even more difficult when Gavin Riedy was forced off through injury. With no substitutes available, Ita’s were reduced to 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

Athea made their numerical advantage count midway through the half, with Sean Ryan finding the net to bring the visitors level at 4–4.

It was a battling performance from the A’s, who showed great character to compete with no substitutes and finish the game with 10 men. With the game finishing 4–4, the penalty shootout served as a tiebreaker in the event of teams finishing level on points at the end of the group. Ethan was the hero on the day, saving two penalties to give the Saints the 4–2 shootout win.

🏆 Munster Junior Cup – Round 2

St Ita’s 0–4 Ballingarry

The Saints welcomed reigning Premier Division champions Ballingarry to Ashford for the second round of the Munster Junior Cup, fully aware that they faced one of the Desmond leagues strongest sides.

St Ita’s made a bright start and enjoyed plenty of possession during the opening exchanges, although they struggled to turn that control into clear-cut chances in the final third.

Ballingarry registered the first effort of note after eight minutes when Ethan comfortably gathered a long-range free kick. The visitors gradually grew into the contest and created their first genuine opening shortly afterwards, but Ethan produced an excellent save with his legs before gathering the rebound.

A minute later, Darragh Lane showed great awareness and determination to nick the ball off the toe of the Ballingarry striker as he threatened to break through on goal. Ethan was called into action again soon after, making another routine save low to his right.

Although Ballingarry were creating the greater number of chances, the Saints continued to carry a threat of their own.

TJ Kelly narrowly missed connecting with a through ball as Edward Lynch raced from his goal to gather on the edge of the area. There was also some excellent interplay between Oisin, Damien and Darragh on the edge of the box, but the final cross lacked the necessary accuracy.

Just before the half-hour mark, Alan Fitz tried his luck from distance with a well-struck effort that sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

Ballingarry continued to look dangerous in attack, and Ethan was called upon once again. The Saints quickly turned defence into attack, with Oisin’s cross deflecting behind for a corner. Lynch confidently claimed the resulting set piece and immediately released Gary McInerney on the counter-attack. McInerney drove forward, but his effort flashed narrowly wide of the post.

Darragh Lane was then called upon again, blocking two efforts in quick succession — both with his head — to keep the visitors at bay.

The Saints remained particularly dangerous from set pieces. Paul Fitz was desperately unlucky to see headers from two consecutive corners drift narrowly wide.

Ballingarry thought they had taken the lead on 38 minutes when they found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside. It proved to be only a brief reprieve for St Ita’s.

Moments later, excellent work from Dean Clancy on the edge of the Ita’s box created space for Gary McInerney. The Ballingarry forward found himself unmarked and made no mistake from eight yards, giving the visitors the lead.

There was still time before the interval for Ballingarry to threaten again from a well-struck free kick, but Ethan produced another fine save to tip the effort over the bar.

Half-time: St Ita’s 0–1 Ballingarry

Ballingarry began the second half as they had finished the first, with Eoin Lynch forcing Ethan into another save at his near post while under pressure from Eamon.

The visitors doubled their advantage on 48 minutes. McInerney squared the ball across the box to Dean Clancy, whose perfectly timed run kept him onside before he calmly slotted into the bottom-right corner.

Despite falling two goals behind, the Saints refused to surrender.

Alan Fitz tested Edward Lynch again with a well-struck effort, forcing the Ballingarry goalkeeper into another save.

Five minutes later, St Ita’s created their best opportunity to get back into the contest. Jack Long squared the ball across to TJ Kelly, but his effort was blocked by Lynch before a Ballingarry centre-half reacted quickly to hook the loose ball clear.

Any hopes of a comeback were dealt a major blow just after the hour mark when Ballingarry added a third, Jamie Forde finding the net shortly after being introduced.

At 0–3, the tie appeared to be beyond the Saints, but both sides continued to play open, entertaining football.

TJ Kelly was desperately unlucky not to get the goal his endeavour deserved on 70 minutes. His effort beat the Ballingarry goalkeeper, only for a defender to produce a superb last-ditch sliding clearance.

Edward Lynch was called into action again during the final 15 minutes when Callum’s dangerous outswinging free kick forced him to remain alert. TJ then met the resulting corner with a header, but, stretching and off balance, he could not direct his effort on target.

As the Saints pushed for a consolation, tired legs began to create gaps at the back, and Ballingarry found an opportunity to put the result beyond doubt.

A moment of hesitation on the edge of the Ita’s area allowed Marvin Pangdon to nip in and take advantage, firing home from 12 yards to complete the scoring.

Full-time: St Ita’s 0–4 Ballingarry

The final scoreline was harsh on the Saints in light of their overall performance. Ballingarry deserved their victory and showed why they are reigning Premier Division champions, particularly through their ability to punish mistakes and take their chances.

Nevertheless, there were plenty of positives for St Ita’s to take from the game. The Saints created opportunities, competed until the final whistle and showed considerable endeavour against a very strong opposition.

The scoreline may read 0–4, but it certainly does not tell the full story of the Saints’ performance.

Best of luck to Ballingarry in the next round of the Munster Junior Cup. ⚽💙
