Luggacurren 10k The Luggacurren 10k, one of the longest running road races in Co Laois, it takes place every September and this year will see it celebrate its 25th year.

Results from today. Super well done to everyone who took part in the competitive and no competitive 10k’s and 5k.

Jack McMahon and Breda McDonald, both Ballyroan, had the honour of winning the first edition of the new course and consequently now hold the course records for the new course. Well done to you both 🏆 🥇🥇 ⏱️

*** Luggacurren 10k ***

This year’s Luggacurren 10k took place on a new course. It was decided to remove a section of the old course that saw athletes out on the very busy N80. The new course is now an out and back but safely contained on the local roads of the old course.

There was a great turnout for the noncompetitive 5 and 10k’s. They set off at 12:30. This was followed at 1:00 by the competitive 10k. Competitors welcomed the fact that the new course included 600m of extra downhill from the starting point. It took them past the hall and over the finish line where there was lots of support cheering everyone on.

Jack McMahon from Ballyroan lead everyone out with a strong pace. From early on small groups started to form and as the kilometres passed, these groups started to spread out. It was a double win for Ballyroan with Breda McDonald and Jack McMahon taking the honours in the ladies and the men’s, both leading from start to finish. There were lots of individual battles behind them, with it finishing 2nd Megan McCarthy Kilkenny City Harriers, 3rd Lisa Sweeney St. Michael’s and 4th Sadie Wheatley. The men’s also saw some great performances with 2nd Joe Breen SBR, 3rd Stephen Hunter St Abban’s and 4th Nikolas De Giorgis Portlaoise.

The late PJ Dunne was remembered. He supplied the 2 cups back in the inaugural race in 1992 and have been presented to the winning men’s and women’s team each year since. This year proved to be a hard fought 2 way battle in the men’s with St Abban’s just pipping Ballyroan by a mere 4 points. There were no ladies teams this year so the cup remained with St Abban’s who won it last year.

The feedback at the end of today was very positive, with a lot of people praising how well organised the race was. There jury is still debating whether the old course was more challenging or not.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this race a success today. A lot of work was put into planning and preparing the new course, as well as all the volunteers who marshalled the course, manned the start and finish lines as well as providing the fabulous refreshments afterwards and a huge thanks to all the race sponsors.

See you all next year for Luggacurren # 34!

*** Luggacurren 5K and 10k ***

The annual Luggacurren 10k plus non-competitive 5 and 10k taking place this Sunday. All support greatly appreciated for a local race that’s organised by members of St Abban’s. A new course this year that’s flatter and faster. Plus the usual top class tea and refreshments and prize giving in the hall afterwards. See you there 🏃‍♂️ 🏃 🏆 🫖 🥪 🍰 🧁
