Head out to Keeper Hill, or Sliabh Coimealta, for a great day in the hills. Starting from the Doonane car park, the route takes you through Ballyhourigan Woods along forestry roads before climbing towards the summit.
It’s a long walk, but not overly challenging, with the forest road making the majority of the route a comfortable ramble. Keep your eyes peeled for the amazing views — and you might even spot a hen harrier, as Keeper Hill is an important area for them.
The weather gave us all four seasons in one day, but overall it stayed warm and made for a brilliant day out. The climb to the top is well worth it, with cracking views across the Shannon region.
The name Sliabh Coimealta means “mountain of guarding”. Legend tells of Sadb, a king’s daughter, who sheltered her children on the mountain.
⛰️ Distance/time: 3.5 hours at a fast pace
🌦️ Weather: All seasons, but mostly warm
🌲 Route: Doonane → Ballyhourigan Woods → Keeper Hill summit
Definitely one for the list! 🇮🇪
