Natalia (age 12) and Gabriel (age 9), in Romania, live with their parents in a small house with no running water or bathroom.
Both of them are doing well in school, and their parents encourage them to study, as they said:
"Education is the only way to escape poverty and to have a bright futureā.
Natalia couldnāt stop smiling as she started opening her shoebox. Gabriel was veryshy and didnāt know what to do until his mother looked at him and nodded that itās ok to open the present because it was for him. He took the shoebox and sat down in a corner. Slowly, he started to take each item from the shoebox, looked at it and placed it beside him. After he finished looking at his present, he started placing each item back in the shoebox in the same order in which he took them out. He said āI want to open and close this shoebox again and again, to see the presents over and over because Iāve never had such a beautiful present and I want to feel this happiness again!ā
