4 Medals at Portimão Box Cup for Rochfortbridge Boxers
Our four boxers competing at the prestigious Portimão Box Cup returned home with an outstanding haul of 2 gold and 2 bronze medals.
Carley O’Herron produced a superb performance to defeat the Swiss number one in her age group, delivering a dominant and convincing display against a very talented opponent.
Likewise, her sister Sieanna came out the right side of the judges against a top class English champion (in and outside of the ring) after a tense and highly competitive bout both girls giving their all.
Cathal Kealy also put in an excellent performance against the eventual winner — a big, explosive and physically mature boxer from Norway. Cathal showed tremendous skill and heart throughout, boxing brilliantly until tiring late on and losing out on a unanimous decision. Valuable lessons learned at a very high level.
Ashley O’Herron was unfortunate not to progress further. After boxing well in the opening round against a far more experienced opponent, Ashley really began to come into her own in round two before receiving a very soft count, with the contest then unexpectedly waved off. A bizarre refereeing decision, but still a hugely encouraging performance from Ashley considering her opponent stopped the other finalist in 30 seconds of
Rd 1.
Luke Hall unfortunately had to withdraw from the elite section as he continues to recover from recent illness. However, in major news for the club, Luke has been selected to represent Ireland at the upcoming 4 Nations tournament, alongside Carley and Sieanna O’Herron. More on that in a separate post.
The Portimão Box Cup was an outstanding competition and all our boxers did the club proud. It provided invaluable experience and highlighted the level of work required to compete at the very top.
Winning two gold medals at this level is a significant achievement, while the two bronze medals are equally encouraging. Joining forces with our friends from St Joseph’s Edenderry, Enniskerry BC and Arklow BC also made for a fantastic few days away.

Congratulations to our 3 Boxers who have been selected to represent Ireland.
Rochfortbridge Boxing Club is celebrating a major milestone, with three of our boxers selected to represent Ireland in the coming weeks — a huge honour for both the athletes and the club.
Luke Hall was selected for Ireland’s elite team and would have traveled to Sweden to compete against the Swedish national side but unfortunately picked up an ilness and couldnt travel. However his selection follows his inclusion in the High Performance Unit’s new targeted pathway programme — a clear recognition of his exceptional ability and potential. Competing at this elite level is a rare achievement, making this a proud moment for Luke and the club.
Carley O’Herron, a five-time Irish champion and double European medallist, has been selected to represent Ireland in an international against Scotland in Drogheda on 24th of May and her sister Sieanna O’Herron, a three-time consecutive All-Ireland champion, will represent Ireland in a Four Nations tournament in Motherwell, Scotland in June.
For a small rural club, we are really pleased with this accomplishment — especially considering we had just five boxers competing this season. These athletes are a credit to the club and serve as fantastic role models for the many young members who have joined recently.
Looking ahead, we have a number of exciting prospects preparing to make their debuts later this summer and towards the end of the year.
It promises to be a busy few weeks, with Carley O’Herron also competing in the U19 All Ireland final this saturday. In addition, a strong team of five boxers from the club will travel to Portugal at the end of this month to compete in the Portimão Box Cup
