A warm and sunny evening saw some hot and furious racing last night for Round 3 of the Women’s Commission Corkagh Park league. It was one of the rare occasions where the perpetual Corkagh park breeze was welcomed as it brought a cooling respite for all the riders.

13 women in total raced yesterday evening, across 3 different groups. The B’s set of first and worked well together to make the A’s work hard to make the catch. Once the catch was made the A+ were not far behind, with the riders choosing to take a breather and a sip of water to be ready for the merging of the groups.

Once all groups came together there was some glaring and teasing but in the end Sarah Diamond decided to make the break and go for it, securing a gap for herself on the chasing group. Despite Ellen Ní Cleirigh and Jennifer Caverly working hard to close that gap, Diamond went on to have a solo victory.

Junior Aoibhe Reilly showed the experience gained from the nationals and won both the B prime sprint as well as the overall B race. She also accumulated 70 points so will be promoted to A for her next race. Claire Ní Reachtagain took the A race prime sprint.

The 2026 Mullingar GP, by Lakeside Wheelers, played host to the 4th round of the Women’s National Series last weekend. A number of the top contenders in the National Series standings were on the start line in the hopes of securing further ranking points and taking home a tough win.

The opening 20km saw the group remain together despite early attacks from Ellena Wallace, Ellen Ní Cleirigh, Sarah Diamond, and Doireann Killeen. Each attempt was hunted down by the main group.

With a prime up for grabs at the end of the first lap, Diamond leveraged her triathlon strength to go off the front with a kilometre to go. The group chased, however Ni Cleirigh was the only rider to bridge the gap over to her ahead of the prime, with the pair coming in together as they passed through Multyfarnnham village. Ní Cleirigh then came around Diamond in the final 100m to claim the prime.

The bunch came back together during the second lap at the QoM climb. With attacks flying, the leading bunch was finally broken down to eight riders. Diamond then made an impressive solo attack. After staying away for 10-15min, the chasing group brought her back in with Jennifer Caverly pulling a strong turn on the front to reel her back in. A special mention goes to Doireann Killeen who made several strong attacks on the rolling parts of the course but was unable to break away from the group.

With 5km to go, the bunch speed dropped slightly and Joanne Ni Mhathuna and Ysabella Huele put in a big effort to rejoin the group.

Inside the final km, Diamond once again bravely attempted a solo breakaway. She was followed by Killeen, Caverly, Wallace and Ní Cleirigh, with the group undertaking an all-out sprint finish. Ní Cleirigh crossed the line first, followed by Killeen and Caverly in second and third respectively.

This is a Women only race, with A & B races either separate or combined with handicaps, starting from 7:15PM in Corkagh Park.

Non-Cycling Ireland members can purchase a 10 euro event licence to race.
