If your goal is fat loss while building or maintaining muscle, doing weights before cardio can make sense for a few reasons:

1. You prioritize muscle building

Strength training requires a lot of energy and focus. Doing it first means you’re less likely to be fatigued and can lift with better intensity, technique, and performance — all important for muscle growth.

2. You can use more energy from glycogen during weights

Resistance training relies heavily on stored muscle glycogen. Think of this as stored energy in the muscle. Doing weights first can reduce glycogen availability before your cardio session, potentially increasing the amount of fat burned for fuel during cardio afterwards. But remember this is reliant on you maintaining a caloric deficit over time. Weight or cardio won’t help you lose fat if you’re consuming too many calories.

3. Cardio becomes the “finisher”

After lifting, you can use cardio to increase your total energy expenditure without letting cardio fatigue interfere with your most important work — your resistance training.

4. Better for preserving muscle during a cut

When you’re dieting, resistance training provides the strongest signal to your body to keep its muscle mass. Putting weights first helps ensure you don’t sacrifice lifting performance because you’re already tired from cardio.

5. It can help you train harder

If you do a hard cardio session first, your legs and cardiovascular system may already be fatigued when you start lifting. That can mean fewer reps, less weight, and lower-quality training.

-The important thing to remember:

Weights → cardio isn’t inherently superior for fat loss. The biggest factors are your overall calorie intake, protein intake, resistance-training quality, daily activity, and recovery.

For fat loss + muscle building, a good general setup is:

Weights → 15–30 min moderate cardio → adequate protein → recover😴

🔥 11KG DOWN & CONFIDENCE UP.

Jamie came into coaching with a wedding coming up, but knew that trying to do it alone wasn’t working.

Motivation, consistency and confidence were the biggest challenges.

Fast forward to now… 11kg lost for his wedding, more energy, a huge boost in confidence, and most importantly, feeling so much better in himself. 👊

But for me, the biggest win from Jamie’s journey wasn’t just the weight loss.

It was hearing him say:

“I feel so much better in my body than I did at the start.”

That’s what coaching should be about. Not just changing how you look, but changing how you feel, think and live.

Every journey is different. For Jamie I knew that I needed to provide support, accountability and structure for him to stay on track — without ever feeling pressured.

If you’re trying to make a change but struggling to stay accountable on your own, you don’t have to do it alone.
