Torro United AFC

Torro United U13 girls got their Premier Shield campaign underway at Powderly Park in Kilberry this morning where Trim Celtic were the visitors. The Torro girls were playing into a very strong wind in the first half and Una Uradnikova in the goal had to work hard to find her passes but was more than up to the task. Trim tried some direct, route one football with the wind behind them but Zoe Brecknell and Aoibhín Primrose in central defense stood firm. Torro started to take control of the game and got into a good passing rhythm. The girls in yellow scored first, after Amelia Carroll in central midfield hit a laser pass out to Erin Coughlan on the right wing, who surged towards the Trim box and delivered a pass to the on rushing Aoibh Conlon at the back post who hammered it past the keeper. Torro were on the attack again soon after, not giving Trim a chance to recover. Amèlie Tyndall passed to Erin Coughlan who made a bending run toward goal, her rasping shot was parried by the Trim keeper, but fell back to Erin who chipped the ball across the goal to Aoibh Conlon for a tap in.

The second half started much how the first had finished, with Torro in the ascendancy. Hard work all over the field saw them create plenty of chances, and all present could sense that another goal was coming. Mid way through the half good work from Cerys McGuinness earned Torro a corner. The left boot of Aoibh Conlon delivered a ball to Sophie McGarry at the front post, who made no mistake from 6 yards and smashed the ball into the net - 3 nil Torro. Trim upped their work rate and were rewarded with 2 late goals, both coming from breaks. Torro had enough in the tank to close out the last couple of minutes and seal victory. Torro progress to the quarter finals where a home tie against Kentstown Rovers awaits.

U15 Plate (Boys)

Walshestown FC 2 - 0 Torro United AFC

A disappointing result for our under 15 boys in the Plate section away to Walshestown FC today.

The strong wind was major obstacle for both teams in each half but playing against it in the first half Torro United thought they had done enough to get to the break on level terms only for a penalty (of the soft variety) on the stroke of half time to give the host a slender advantage at the break.

With the wind at their backs Torro United set about reducing the deficit and had the bulk of possesion as the half wore on. They created several chances to draw level but needed to be more clinical in front of goals with the Walshestown FC keeper producing some telling saves.

As can often be the case pressing for an equaliser can often lead to breakaway goals and unfortunately for this side that’s what happened and Torro United found themselves two behind with a mountain to climb. They pushed men forward, went close on a few occasions but couldn’t get that elusive goal and bowed out of the Plate for this season.

Best on the day was Eamon Callaghan deputising in goal, Darragh Halpenny and Luke McLoughlin.

Our Men’s Division 1 side had to battle back from a 3-0 deficit against Black Bull FC this morning in Powderly Park. Black Bull had a strong start to the game and put away their chances to leave Torro with it all to do in the second half. The lads got 2 goals back but it took until the dying stages of the game to pull back a third to take a share of the points.
Scorers on the day were Peter Carroll, Andy Tolan & Conor Coogan. Well done lads.

Our Men’s 2nd team took an important 3 points away on Friday night against Bailieboro Celtic. Scorers on the night were Evan Bird & Ben Caldwell. Well done lads

Our ladies play away tomorrow taking on Kinnegad Juniors in their next league match.

U15 Boys Div 2

Torro United AFC 1 - 1 Parkvilla FC

Torro united were looking to go 3 wins from three in Division 2 league when hosting Parkvilla FC on Thursday Evening.

And they very nearly did! Playing under the new lights in Powderly Park for the first time , Torro took the lead close to half time when Christopher Bagnall hit a looping shot that evaded the ‘villa keeper. All in all the first half was a scrappy affair with Parkvilla shading it in terms of possession but Torro taking a lead into the break with some resolute defensive work.

The 2nd half saw a better game and Torro Utd put in another massive defensive display to try to hold onto their slender advantage and they nearly did only to be undone in the final 5mins when Parkvilla converted a free kick. Despite that setback it was another point gained in their final Division 2 game of the season finishing with 20 points, 6 wins , 2 draws and 4 losses. (not including 2 wins against Dunshaughlin Youths who were subsequently regraded)

Focus now turns to a round of 16 Plate game away on Sunday vs Walshestown FC.

Our Men’s 2nd team hit the road tomorrow evening to take on Bailieboro Celtic in the league.

U15 Div 2 Boys

Ballivor FC 1 - 2 Torro United AFC

Torro United travelled to the Delvin Sports Grounds to take on Ballivor FC in this league clash.
Torro were solid in the first half and besides having some chances themselves they restricted the hosts to less leading to stalemate at the break, 0-0.

Torro United knew the game was there for the taking if they could be better in the final third and no more than 3 minutes into the second half they made the breakthrough when Sam Reilly was fouled in the box and Thomas Kelly slotted away the resultant penalty. It wasn’t too long after when Thomas Kelly made it two with a great through ball from Christopher Bagnall. Torro were in the ascendancy but Ballivor weren’t out of game and after several chances from corners they scored with a breakaway goal to leave a tense finish. Neither team wanted to lose but it was Torro who held out and claimed the win. Best on the day of solid performance were Dylan Rochford, Darragh Halpenny, Jack Keane and Thomas Kelly.

Torro United’s U13 girls were on the road at Parkceltic Summerhill this morning for their final league game of the season. Torro settled quickly and started creating chances right from the off. The Torro girls were very composed on the ball and were moving it well, the large crowd of Torro supporters could sense that a goal was coming. Una Uradnikova’s excellent pass found Amelia Carroll in midfield, who set off on a powerful run up the center and beat the last of the Summerhill defenders before slotting the ball into the net to open the scoring. The girls doubled their lead soon when Amèlie Tyndall skillfully chipped the ball over the retreating keeper following some fine link-up play with Cerys McGuinness. Torro went 3 up just before the break when Erin Coughlan drifted in from the wing to nestle the ball into the net.

Summerhill started the 2nd half brightly and began to ask questions of the Torro defense; the back line of Aoibhín Primrose, Zoe Brecknell and Dayna Beckham answered emphatically and continued to play shut out football. Back on the attack Aoibh Conlon turned a defender and went one on one with the keeper, calmly sliding the ball into the goal. The hallmark of this Torro team has been their work rate and this was again present in spades from every player in the yellow and green. Kayla Reilly and Juno Lyons were constantly pressing and making it difficult for the defense to clear the ball. Torro scored again thanks to the boot of Sophie McGarry who had a blistering strike sail past the keeper. Emily Markey was unlucky not to add another after her magnificent run from deep in midfield ended in a good save from the keeper. Torro closed out the game to claim the rare honour of going undefeated for the league season and lift the trophy.
