Newcastle West: 32
Newcastle West qualified for the Transfield Cup final with a victory over Shannon in Coonagh last Friday evening. The game was played in ideal conditions and both teams running the ball at every opportunity.
NCW were first on the scoreboard when Rob Guerin touched down for a try after eight minutes which Shane Airey converted. Shannon came right back and added a converted try five minutes later.
Shane scored a penalty before Shannon took the lead with another converted try. Kieran Copse was next to score when he scored a try in the corner after the team ran the ball from their own half. With ten minutes remaining in the half Cian Mulcahy scored a try following a great pass from Shane who also converted. Shannon scored a penalty to bring the half time score to 17 22.
The second half was as entertaining as the first, Shane extended our lead when he scored a penalty from the touch line. Shannon added another converted try to bring the score to 24 25. With twenty minutes remaining Airey scored the try of the game when side stepped a number of defenders to score under the posts, he also added the conversion. With fifteen minutes to go Shannon scored another converted try to leave the score 31 32. Both teams had a number of scoring chances but the defences held firm.
In injury time Shannon were awarded a penalty which drifted to the right of the posts and NCW held on for the win.
Man of the match was Cian Tierney closely followed by Julian Bell, Rob Guerin and Cian Mulcahy.
