Tomorrow October 10th is World Mental Health Day, when we can pause and reflect on how we’re really doing, and talk openly about mental health. 🧠

Finding balance in a noisy world

It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, both by what’s happening in our own lives and what’s going on in the wider world. Take small steps to protect your own wellbeing and support those around us.

Focusing on activities that ground you and giving yourself permission to rest can make a real difference.

This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to check in with yourself and those around you. πŸ’ͺ

A new Build class is starting Tue the 13th Oct at 6:30 pm for men and 7:15 pm for women and will run every Tue and Thur for 8 weeks til early Dec. 45 min classes, ideal for those who have been considering getting back to the gym, complete beginners looking for a less intimidating environment to get going or those who get enough cardio elsewhere in week walking etc. and are looking to get some high rep, load bearing, bone strengthening work done for the winter. Sculpt muscle without being burnt out. If that sounds like something, that may be appealing, get in touch! πŸ“±πŸ“ž

*zero running, burpees, or minimal cardio involved!! Sessions may involve a short 5/10 min metcon style finisher towards the end of a session to spike the heartrate. πŸ«€

Half kneeling is a favoured position at SFX Sports & Fitness for teaching and reinforcing movement.

This is what you would call a "self-limiting" position. The set up itself creates constraints that make it harder to compensate and easier to feel when you lose position.

It is favoured for 3 big reasons;

1) Develops hip and pelvic stability.
The narrow, asymmetrical base forces you to control the downside hip and pelvis while maintaining a stacked trunk. Great in hip rehab and early training.

2) Reduces compensation.
Pressing, pulling, throwing, chopping and lifting from half kneeling limits your ability to create movement through excessive lumbar extension, rotation or side bending. You have to produce movement while keeping the trunk and pelvis organised. It is ideal to teach beginners proper positioning or to cycle back in periodically to work through plateaus.

3) Simplifies exercises for beginners.
Sometimes the best regression is simply taking away degrees of freedom. Bringing someone closer to the ground removes some of the moving parts and lets them focus on the skill you actually want them to learn.

A half kneeling row is a perfect example. If someone struggles to control their trunk during a three-point row, bring them down to half kneeling, clear up the pattern, then build them back toward standing.

Progression and regression aren't always about adding or removing load. Sometimes the best option is finding a position that constrains compensation and encourages the movement you want. πŸ‘Œ

A stroke survivor's recovery varies greatly depending on stroke severity, but rehabilitation is crucial for regaining lost function. Common challenges include memory and planning difficulties, while physical impairments can range from minor to severe. Survivors are at high risk for a second stroke, making risk factor management (diet, exercise, medication, regular check-ups) essential. Long-term support is vital, focusing on communication, encouraging independence, and providing emotional support and help with rehabilitation.
