Blustery Winter Spoons 2

A Blustery Day on the Green!
On a blustery day, 14 hardy competitors turned up for a game of two doubles and one treble. The conditions were testing, with a severe gale at times blowing across the green, but that didn’t deter our hardy competitors!

As Session One progressed, shouts of “Toucher!” rang out across the green, with scores being added to the board. At the end of the first session, the scores were modest enough, with the highest being 13, 11 and 10.

After the break, the red team on Rink 3 got off to an early start and began to rack up what they thought was a winning score of 32, as could be seen from the glee on their faces when they finished!

However, not to be outdone, the red team on Rink 2, late starters they may have been, came up on the rails to sn**ch a joint first place, also with a score of 32! What a finish!

Let the Spoons Begin!

And they off! The Autumn/Winter 2026 season of the Spoons is up and running!

Today, 26 members assembled for the inaugural session in beautiful autumn sunshine. A few new twists, including a point for a toucher and skips nominating which end would be their power-play end, were being road-tested.

The games got off to a good start, with the Blue team on Rink 4 scoring 18 at the break, only for the Blue team on Rink 3 to follow hot on their heels with 23.

After the break, play resumed, with several touchers being racked up and some impressive power-play scores.

The eventual winners, after scoring a wonderful 28 in the second game to finish with a final score of 36, were Anthony, Fred and Seamus F on Rink 2. June was on hand to present the prizes to the delighted team.

A good day all round! We'll do it all again next Wednesday!

Novices Cup 2026

What a fantastic two days of bowls, brilliant competition, great sportsmanship and plenty of delicious cake as our Novices Cup came to an exciting conclusion!

The Novices Cup got off to a fantastic start with four excellent quarter-final matches on Day 1, followed by two keenly contested semi-finals and a cracking final today!

It was wonderful to see so many members turning out over both days to support and encourage our novice players. A big thank you to Liz, Pascal, John and Paul for marking the quarter-finals, and to everyone who helped make the event such a success.

The semi-finals certainly delivered, with Noel just squeezing past Dennis, while Tom, after a great start, held off June’s challenge.

And then came the final! A closely fought contest with some fantastic shots from both players kept the spectators entertained, but it was Noel who came out on top, beating Tom 15–11 to lift the Novices Cup!

Congratulations, Noel, and hard luck, Tom. Both players gave us a final to enjoy!

Perhaps the most rewarding part of the competition was seeing the progress made by all our novice players throughout the season. On behalf of the committee, a huge thank you to our coaches Tom, Rattana and Maureen for their guidance, patience and support every Monday, helping our newest members develop their skills and confidence.

And, of course, a massive thank you to our wonderful bakers who kept everyone fuelled with absolutely delicious refreshments over both days. You certainly know how to keep a crowd happy!

Our Treasurer, Dympna, presented the prizes, and a special thank you to our star photographer, Frank, for capturing the action.

That brings the 2026 season’s eight club championships to a successful close at Sligo LBC , but don't put those bowls away just yet!

CHARLIE’S WINTER SPOONS IS NEXT!

With a couple of exciting rule changes to shake things up, the Spoons will be running every Wednesday and Saturday until mid-December. Expect plenty of fun, a little friendly rivalry and, naturally, the occasional teaspoon of chaos!

Well done to everyone involved in making the Novices Cup such a success. See you on the green for the Spoons!

Rogers Round Robin 2026

Our Annual Round Robin - 2 Wood Pairs

On a day that served up all four seasons in blustery conditions, 28 hardy competitors braved the elements to compete in the Sligo LBC Annual Round Robin 2 Wood Pairs competition!

Four groups were formed, two comprising four pairs and two comprising three pairs. Following some excellent matches, the group winners emerged as follows:

- Group A: Liz Cunnane & Seamus Duffy

- Group B: Chuck Devaney & Frank O’Gara

- Group C: Maureen Glennon & Pascal Cunnane

- Group D: Brian Scanlon & Plunkett Doherty

The semi-finals saw Liz & Seamus and Brian & Plunkett secure their places in the final.

Played over eight ends, the final saw Liz & Seamus make a flying start, building a commanding lead that proved decisive, with the match finishing after just six ends.

Many congratulations to Liz & Seamus, who were in superb form throughout the day! Commiserations to Brian & Plunkett, who enjoyed a great run to the final.

A special word of sincere thanks to all our kind members who provided refreshments for the players to enjoy, including Michael and Maureen Glennon, Rattana, Tom Corcoran and June Elliott. Apologies if anyone has been inadvertently omitted!

Annual Mixed Triples – Three Days of Fantastic Bowls

The Sligo Lawn Bowls Club annual Mixed Triples competition provided three days of excellent bowling, great sporting spirit and plenty of entertainment for players and spectators alike.

Day 1 – The Competition Gets Underway

Day 1 got off to a fantastic start in perfect conditions for bowls, with 24 enthusiastic competitors taking to the green and putting on a great display of mixed triples play.

There was plenty of exciting bowling throughout the day, with four teams progressing to the semi-finals:

- Team 2 – 1½–½

- Team 4 – 2–0

- Team 5 – 2–0

- Team 7 – 2–1

With the semi-final places decided, attention turned to Day 2 and two eagerly anticipated matches.

Day 2 – Semi-Final Action

Semi-final day was Annual Mixed Triples – Three Days of Fantastic Bowls in much cooler conditions, with a light drizzle arriving during the later stages of the matches. However, the weather did little to dampen the quality of the bowling.

Both semi-finals produced some fantastic shots and plenty of competitive play, with Team 4 and Team 7 eventually securing their places in the final.

Team 4 won 2–0, while Team 7 also prevailed 2–0, although both teams had to work hard for their victories.

Everything was now set for an exciting final.

Day 3 – A Cracking Final

The final of the Mixed Triples, played in glorious sunshine, certainly lived up to its billing, with a cracking match between Team 4 – Paula, Kathleen and John N and Team 7 – Dympna, Chuck and Liz.

Team 4 came flying out of the blocks and took the first set convincingly, winning 13–4. Team 7 regrouped during the break and showed their quality with an excellent response, taking the Annual Mixed Triples – Three Days of Fantastic Bowls set 10–1.

With the sets tied, the destination of the title would be decided by a tie-break.

The first end of the tie-break saw Team 7 holding the initiative, with a superb back toucher putting them in a strong position. However, Team 4 produced a decisive moment with their final bowl, playing the perfect shot to squeeze the jack out and over onto their own bowl to take the end.

That gave Team 4 the momentum, and they went on to close out the match in the following end to secure victory.

Many congratulations to Team 4 – Paula, Kathleen and John N – on winning the 2026 Annual Mixed Triples.

Commiserations to Team 7 – Dympna, Chuck and Liz – who played their part in a hugely entertaining final and pushed their opponents all the way.

A Great Three Days for Sligo LBC

It has been another fantastic three days of competition, showcasing some excellent bowling and, most importantly, the great spirit and camaraderie that makes club competitions so enjoyable.

A huge thank you to all the players, spectators and helpers who contributed to making the competition another memorable and successful event for Sligo Lawn Bowls Club.

Congratulations once again to our winners, and well done to everyone who took part. We look forward to plenty more great bowls on the green!

The Falls Return

A Fantastic Afternoon of Bowls, Banter & Craic!

Today we were delighted to welcome Falls Bowling Club to Sligo Lawn Bowls Club as part of their President’s Weekend tour.

The Falls arrived at 2pm and play soon got underway. With 15 players on the visiting team, names were put into a hat and Vincent Parkes from Sligo LBC joined The Falls team to make up four even rinks.

And then the fun began!

There was plenty of great banter and craic throughout the afternoon, with some fun prizes up for grabs during the game. We decided to play 14 ends straight through, with tea and refreshments waiting for everyone afterwards.

THE FUN PRIZES

The L-Plate Learner Award

For anyone who forgot their bias! The unlucky player had to proudly wear the L-plates until the final end of the game. We had a few of these making their way around the green!

The Ditch-Master’s Delight

Chocolate for the first player from each side to successfully trail the jack into the ditch.

A handy chalk pen for the first player from each side to land a standard toucher.

Winners:

• Paula Moran – Sligo LBC – End 1

• Paul McGill – The Falls – End 2

The Miracle Deflection Award

Sour jellies for the first player from each side to pull off a particularly dirty wick/fluke shot!

Winners:

• Paula Moran – Sligo LBC – End 5

• David McGuigan – The Falls – End 10

BUT THEN CAME THE FINAL END...

For the dirtiest wick ever seen on our lawn (today, anyway)! a special award of a large bar of chocolate was presented to Tommy from The Falls on Rink 4.

His spectacular wick in End 14 secured a point for The Falls, although, unfortunately for Tommy and his team, it wasn't enough to take the game!

After the match, we all headed into the clubhouse for tea, sandwiches and some absolutely delicious sweet treats, all provided by our wonderful members. ❤️

Towards the end of tea, our President Michael Glennon presented the prize winners with commemorative certificates to remember the day and, of course, exactly what their unusual prizes were for!

Michael then praised our visitors for their great company and the fantastic afternoon of bowls.

Sean Magorrian from The Falls also said a few words and explained that he had recommended the return visit to Sligo after their memorable trip here in 2024. Sean then presented everyone with commemorative pens to mark the occasion.

Group photos were taken underneath our brand-new club banner, a great way to capture the memories of a brilliant afternoon.

A special mention was also given to Liz Cunnane, Sligo LBC, by Michael for organising the fun awards and for liaising with Gary McWilliams, Secretary of The Falls, who helped make the day such a success.

And thankfully, even the weather played ball! It was windy at times, but we stayed dry, with even the sun making the odd brief appearance.

There was great fun, plenty of laughter, good bowls and, most importantly, great company.

This is what bowls is all about, making friends, enjoying the game and having a bit of craic along the way.

Thank you to everyone from The Falls for making the journey to Sligo. We hope you enjoyed your afternoon with us as much as we enjoyed having you!
