What a brilliant day we had today at Letterkenny Outdoor Bowls Club for our friendly!

The bowls were great craic, the company was fantastic, and the hospitality was absolutely second to none! 👏😊

There was plenty of laughter, some great bowls, a few competitive moments 😉 and, most importantly, a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day.

And we have to mention the FUN AWARDS! 🏆😂

What a brilliant idea, we absolutely loved them and you’ve given us lots of ideas for Sligo! Watch this space! 👀🤣

A huge thank you to everyone at Letterkenny for making us feel so welcome and for giving us such a memorable day. ❤️

We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next season, a home AND away friendly! 🙌

Mixed Pairs 2026

The 2026 SLBC Mixed Pairs competition came to a thrilling conclusion this week after four days of exciting bowls, great sporting moments and plenty of support from members.

With 8 matches played on Day 1, including four that went all the way to deciding tie-breaks, the competition got off to a flying start. Despite a few spells of light drizzle, the weather largely behaved itself and members were treated to some excellent Mixed Pairs bowling across the two sessions.

Quarter-Finals – The Elements Join In!

Quarter-final day certainly tested the players, with persistent rain during the morning sets giving way to glorious sunshine in the afternoon.

All three morning matches went to deciding tie-breaks, adding plenty of drama and tension for those watching. There were also plenty of contenders for “Shot of the Day”:

Kathleen produced a perfect draw around a bowl barely an inch directly in front of the jack.

Maureen G demonstrated exactly how to play a tie-break end, ditching the jack — and following it into the ditch!

Dympna produced a superb draw to a respotted jack.

Pascal somehow found a route through a forest of bowls to rest out the shot bowl on the final tie-break end.

Tom played a perfect draw to close out his match when lying three shots down.

As was said during the week, this was free sporting entertainment - no paywall here!

Semi-Finals

Two excellent semi-finals followed, with one match going all the way to a thrilling final-end tie-break.

After three days of fantastic competition, everything was set for an exciting final between Maureen G & Paul and Dympna & Seamus Flanagan.

A Thrilling Final

The final certainly lived up to expectations, with top-quality bowling throughout.

Dympna and Seamus took the first set 8–3, putting themselves in a strong position. However, Maureen and Paul showed tremendous resilience. At half-time they switched positions, with Paul taking the skip, and the change paid dividends as they mounted an impressive comeback.

Going into the final end of the second set, Maureen and Paul were 7–6 ahead and were lying the one shot they needed to force the match into a deciding tie-break. Paul's bowl was sitting approximately six inches to the side of the jack.

Then came the decisive moment.

Dympna kept her composure and produced a superb shot, nestling her bowl perfectly between the jack and Paul's bowl. It was enough to tie the second set and, having won the first set, secure the match for Dympna & Seamus Flanagan.

A fantastic finish to a fantastic week of Mixed Pairs bowls!

Ah huge thank you goes to all our members and supporters who came along throughout the competition and helped create such a great atmosphere.

And a special thank you to June, Rattana, Nuala and Michael G for bringing in the fabulous treats for the half-time refreshments. They were, quite simply, out of this world!

It was also lovely to see Mark Dunne coming along to watch the competition on both the semi-final and final days.

Congratulations to Dympna & Seamus, and well done to Maureen & Paul on a superb final and an excellent fightback.

Most importantly, congratulations to everyone who took part. The week showcased exactly what makes club bowls so enjoyable - competitive matches, great shots, plenty of drama, good humour and fantastic camaraderie.

Supreme Champion of Spoons – Summer 2026

The final of the Supreme Champion of Spoons Summer 2026 took place after play today, 15th July, with Ladies' Champion Liz taking on Men's Champion John N.

Under a blistering afternoon sun, a small but select group of spectators gathered to watch a terrific final that kept everyone on the edge of their (very warm!) seats right to the finish. Plenty of water was consumed, and thankfully we all seemed to win today's battle with the clags, although they certainly put up a brave fight!

John got off to a flying start, winning the first seven ends and looking full of confidence. Liz, however, had other ideas and, in typical Liz fashion, battled her way back to force the match into a tie-break.

When it mattered most, John produced some of his best bowls of the afternoon and ran out a worthy Supreme Champion.

Rattana presented John with a special commemorative spoon, accompanied by ABBA's The Winner Takes It All. Judging by the presentation photo, John was absolutely delighted with his victory... his lip-licking expression says it all!

To round off a very enjoyable afternoon and help everyone cool down, Rattana arrived with ice creams for all those present, which were very much appreciated.

Congratulations to John N, our Supreme Champion of Spoons – Summer 2026, and well done to both finalists for a fantastic game played in very challenging conditions.

A Great Day of Bowls in Dun Laoghaire! 💙💛

With no Championship matches scheduled on Saturday, our very generous hosts at Dun Laoghaire kindly organised a friendly game for the Sligo supporters who had travelled to cheer on our champions.

Playing on an unfamiliar green, both Sligo teams adapted brilliantly and produced excellent performances.

🏆 Team 1 – Lead Pascal, Second Kathleen, and Skip Michael G secured a well-earned 14–10 victory on Rink 4.

🏆 Team 2 – Lead Maureen G, Second Liz, and Skip Frank O delivered a superb performance, winning 23–4 on Rink 2.

It was a fantastic afternoon of bowls, great company, and warm hospitality. A huge thank you to everyone at Dun Laoghaire for making us feel so welcome and for organising such an enjoyable game. Your kindness and generosity made an already memorable weekend even more special.

Champion of Champions Competition 2026 - Mens

Well Done, Jessie! 💙💛

Jessie represented Sligo Lawn Bowls Club with great determination today in the Men's Champion of Champions.

He put in a very strong performance but was unfortunately beaten 21–15 in a closely contested opening match. While the result didn't go his way, he did the club proud with his skill, sportsmanship and fighting spirit.

Well done, Jessie, and thank you for representing Sligo Lawn Bowls Club so proudly. 👏💙💛

Dympna did Sligo Lawn Bowls Club proud today!

She won her opening match 21–15 to reach the last eight. In her quarter-final, she produced a fantastic performance in a thrilling, nail-biting contest, leading for most of the game. Unfortunately, she was pipped at the post in the very last end, losing 21–20 to the defending Champion.

What an incredible effort against the reigning champion. We couldn't be prouder of you, Dympna! 👏🎉
