UBX Barrow Rovers Statement on NICC 2025 Final:

On January 19, 2025, UBX Barrow Rovers played St. Brendan’s in the NICC Final. In the last 0.8 seconds, a controversial three-point shot was awarded to St. Brendan’s at the buzzer, securing them the win. However, official footage clearly shows the ball was still in the player's hands when time expired, as indicated by the red light on the backboard. This was not a judgment call but a factual mistake that should have been corrected on the day before scoresheet was signed and refs leave the arena. Instead, the commissioner advised us to submit an appeal after the game, but we later found out that such errors can only be corrected before the scoresheet is signed. Despite following Basketball Ireland’s appeals process, our case was dismissed, with our second appeal ignored entirely. Escalating to the National Appeals Committee (NAC) was financially impossible for our self-funded club, as the fee alone equals nearly a full-year membership cost.

This has been extremely unfair and deeply frustrating. We invested time and money only to see a clear error ignored rather than corrected. Instead of ensuring fairness, it felt like no one wanted to address it.

We appreciate everyone who supported us in bringing attention to this issue. Hopefully, this pushes Basketball Ireland to introduce an Instant Replay System (IRS)/VAR to prevent similar injustices as that only would have been the difference between us being rightful NICC champions or not.

We were simply asking for fairness, accountability, and the integrity of the competition to be upheld.

Hello Rovers Fans!

Let's have a brief recap of our last games:

13.02.2020

Dublin Lions 66 - Barrow Rovers 67

Rovers weren’t fully focused on the game and allowed the Lions to stay into it and eventually to win it. Even tough our guys thanks to a clutch basket from Matteo Giudici with 1.1 second on the clock Rovers escaped from Clondalkin with the W.

08.02.2020 - NICC Cup Quarter Final

Drogheda Wolves 75 - Barrow Rovers 56

After a great first quarter the Rovers run out of energies pretty soon. Wolves after shocking 15 minutes started to use their full power and they deserved the win.

06.02.2020

Barrow Rovers 69 - Dublin Riders 65

Rovers came back from 13 down in the last 6 minutes to get the win, behind Kostas great defensive plays and clutch free throws from Alexandre K. Love and Cedric Assambo in the final seconds.

31/01/2020

St. Vincents BC 86 - Barrow Rovers 76

Rovers showed up with only 7 players due to various injuries and we have also lost Bruno Trindade in the final minutes of the game after a bad foul. Game went to overtime and Rovers played it with only four players on the court due to foul limit reached by Cedric Assambo after an incredible game.

29.01.2020

Glasnevin BC 67 - Barrow Rovers 71

Rovers played the first 20 minutes at a very high level behind Valerio Amicucci and Cedric Assambo, but in the first 10 minutes of the second half they were able to blow a 16 points lead. In the fourth quarter a couple of good defensive plays and clutch free throws from Cedric Assambo held the victory to our Guys.

21.01.2020

Barrow Rovers 57 - Oblate BC 62

Rovers trailed the whole game and paid a bad defensive play that gave an open three shot to Oblate to win the game in the final seconds.

From the ground up...

In 2014 Barrow Street Rovers was founded by Ignacio Monereo and Paul Marrinan to provide a bunch of guys from Google with the opportunity to play in the Dublin Men’s Basketball Leagues. Following a successful first season and a lot of interest from people outside of Google to join, a decision was made to make the club open to anyone. The club grew to have two competitive teams and has managed promotion during each of the four seasons so far.

Over that four year period the Rovers have come from far and wide with well over 20 nationalities being represented by past and present players. The aim of the club is provide the opportunity to play structured basketball to players that are new to Dublin, and to provide a social outlet for people looking to meet new people. The club is very proud of the team atmosphere and spirit of inclusion that we have developed.
