The STAR interview framework is not new, itâs actually as old as Generation X!
It gained prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. But like Gen X, it still has a lot to offer!
I use it all the time to help my clients prepare powerful responses for interview questions.
My spin? Ensure your STAR has a good story â a STARRY, if you will!
What youâll need:
đ Situation:Â Create a good hook to draw in the interview panel. Start with a fact, or an interesting dimension to your example that will surprise, entertain or compel them. You want the interviewers to lean in here.
đ Task:Â Present your evidence here as the problem that needed resolution. What was at stake here? All employers want their staff to predict/prevent/solve problems. Hereâs your chance to show it in your example.
đ Action:Â Give context to your actions. Explain your thinking, highlight your lateral or logical thinking skills here. Demonstrate your strong interpersonal skills by involving the right people at the right time.
đ Results:Â Now itâs your time to finish with an impactful close. Focus on tangible results, significant improvements in processes, relationships, or the bottom line. Some powerful statistics are great here too.
đ Self-Appraisal:Â Always prepare for the âif you could do anything differently, what would it beâ question. This ensures youâve reflected on your behaviour, skills and weaknesses and are committed to your development. This shows the interview panel that you can give and receive constructive feedback.
If you need help to brush up your interview examples, DM me and I can give you another tip or two!

Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that weâll ever do.ââ BrenĂ© Brown
Now thereâs a challenge from Ms. Brown!
â How many times have we dis-owned our story?
â Tried to eliminate or forget the key learning moments in our lives. The times we werenât at our best, or we let ourselves down?
Not anymore! This February letâs practice some self-love?
Ok, thatâs a bit woolly â what does that actually mean?
From a careerâs perspective, here are some ideas:
â
Accept that you have worth. You are enough â just as you are. Iâll say that again just in case you didnât hear me in the back. âYou are enough â just as you areâ. In work you deserve to feel respected.
â
Accept you wonât be everyoneâs cup of tea â thatâs fine. In work, try not to turn yourself inside out in order to fit in. Is it okay to be yourself? Do you feel psychologically safe?
â
Accept that it is your response-ability to prioritise your wellbeing. Not your parents or your partners or your boss. In work, find sustainable ways to manage your workload and work/life balance. Negotiate this and maintain boundaries.
