The sun was shining at Westport Tennis Club for the Men's Meaney Cup Finals on Saturday. The crowd witnessed two intense cliffhangers with both finals ending in Championship Tiebreaks. In the A final Andrej Likavec defeated Men's Club captain and defending champion Filip Janczak with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. Played at a very fast place throughout, it was Filip who took the first set with his rapid serve dominating. Andrei bounced back in the second set and did very well to win some very long rallies and clinch the 2nd set. The tiebreak was a real battle with Filip taking a 3 1 lead which was overturned with Andrej going 8- 4 ahead. To his credit, Filip fought back to 8-7. However, Andrej regained composure and went on to win 10-7.It was the 2nd Meaney Cup title for the Slovakian !

In the Mens B final, the young Luke MCarthy took on club veteran Dermot Sheehan. Not unlike Boris Becker, Mc Carthy dives about the court and his energy saw him clinch the 1st set. Sheehan, a wiley operator with the fastest serve in the club, bounced back and took the 2nd set 7-5.
However in the end, youth outlasted experience with McCarthy taking the Championship Tiebreak 10-4. It was his first title and if he keeps developing it will no doubt be the first of many! A big congrats to all 4 finalists who enteretained the crowd with two gripping encounters. It was a fitting finale to the landmark competion in the Westport Tennis Club calandar which is run as a mark of respect to John Meaney's immense contribution to the club.

With the Meaney Cup in full swing, we know there are lots of tennis balls past their best! Please prevent them from going to landfill and help a lovely art project by leaving old balls at the tennis club! Thanks for your support 🎾🎾🎾
