GAA Handball 40x20 4-Wall All Ireland Juvenile Finals in Croke Park Sunday 09th March 2025..
Wexford Juvenile Handballers secured two notable victories across the grades at the recent GAA Handball 40x20 4-Wall All Ireland Juvenile Finals in Croke Park. History was made by our U-14 Girls Victoria Dunbar (Davidstown) & Elsa O’Neill (Templeudigan) when they became the only Wexford girls in the history of Juvenile Handball since records began in 1992 to win a premier grade All Ireland in either Singles or Doubles. Thirty three years is a considerably long time by any stretch of the imagination to go without a premier All Ireland for a handballing stronghold like Wexford and it would be remiss of somebody not to mark the achievement by way of a written report. Indeed quite remarkably Wexford is without a Girls All Ireland in U-14 Singles, U-15 Singles or Doubles as well as U-16 Singles or Doubles. To put into context the achievement of Victoria & Elsa one only has to look at our ‘Roll of Honour’ during that thirty three year period from 1992 which numbers 256 Girls All Irelands played (less 8 during Covid) ~ Wexford has won 4 All Irelands in total including the Girls U-14 success and they are as follows ~
Girls U-17 Singles 2008 ~
Michelle Boland (Templeudigan)..
Girls U-17 Doubles 2009 ~
Mairéad Elms & Sandra Kelly (Templeudigan)..
Girls U-17 Doubles 2017 ~
Cliódhna O’Connell (Coolgreany) & Eva Crean (St.Josephs)..
I’m not quite sure what four out of two hundred and fifty six (4/256) indicates but it’s not too healthy of a percentage so a massive congratulations is in order as ‘an rud is annamh is iontach’ or for the uninitiated amongst us ‘what is seldom is wonderful’. Having shown great commitment and enthusiasm to training it was apparent from early in the year that the girls were quite capable of reaching Croke Park on the second Sunday in March and so it proved. They dispatched Grace Carty & Sophie Floyd (Dublin) ‘2 Straights’ in Tinryland on Friday 14th February in the Leinster Semi-Final before beating Faye & Isobel Murphy (Kilkenny) 15-3, 15-2 a week later on Friday 21st February also in Tinryland in the Leinster Final. Next up was a tricky All Ireland Semi-Final in Cullahill, Co.Laois against Tracey Tuohy & Ali Donnelly (Clare), the girls won the 1st 15-7 and were booked for victory before they completely lost their way, falling behind 12-3 in the 2nd with disaster looming on the horizon, however they hauled themselves back into the game to win it 15-13 booking their All Ireland Final ticket. They were ever present at training in the intervening period and it all went according to plan in the Final in Croke Park on Sunday 09th March when they completely overwhelmed Teagan Rhea Clerkin & Ava McKenna (Monaghan) ‘2 Straight’ pulling up. They haven’t got the credit within the county that they deserve and when one looks at the record books of the girls and the years that have gone before it is quite a stunning achievement for Wexford Handball. Indeed Elsa is following in her father Michael’s footsteps as he remarkably won the equivalent 40x20 U-14 Boys All Ireland in 1992 with Colin Keeling (St.Marys) and the 60x30 U-14 Boys in the same year with Barry Goff (Castlebridge). By any standards for any family that is a monumental and outstanding double. Victoria for her part as a relative newcomer to the game has made enormous strides in a very short period of time and she became the first juvenile (boy or girl) in the history of her club Davidstown to win a Juvenile All Ireland. Both girls are extremely good listeners with a brilliant manner and fabulous positivity about them, they are a credit to themselves.
Comhghairdeas Victoria & Elsa..🎉
Not to be left out our boys were also to the fore that same weekend contesting Finals at U-14 Singles and at U-17 Doubles. Charlie Roche (Castlebridge) after beating Dara Crosse (Tipperary) the previous day in his Singles Semi-Final squared up against Eolann Kelly (Loughmacrory, Tyrone) in the Boys Blue Riband U-14 Singles Final. He was hoping to become the first Wexford player in forty seven years to win the above Final, indeed in my recollection no other Wexford boy with the possible exception of Raymond Breen (Templeudigan) 1989 ever got to the Final but I stand corrected on that, he was the only one though. After an heroic performance from the ‘Over the Water’ man he went out on his shield 9-15, 15-3, 15-12. An Injury Time Out for Tyrone certainly didn’t help Charlie’s cause in the 3rd when he had the Loughmacrory man in all sorts of bother before agonisingly losing it 15-12 on the ‘drive to the line’. Eolann was following in the footsteps of Ciaran Curran (1987, 1988), Brian Donaghy (2003), Sean Kerr (2012), Lorcan McBride (2015) & Gary McAleer (2019), any scrutiny of the names above and/or the pedigree of Tyrone Handball leaves nobody in any doubt about the size of the task that was facing Charlie but he arguably was the better player and at the very least left the impression that in two years time he can reverse the result. Head down and given his skill set it’s reasonable to assume he’ll make the anticipated improvement.
Boys U-17 Doubles is a grade we invariably do well in and with three titles in five years (no Championship during Covid 2021), courtesy of Joe Devereux & David Doyle (Castlebridge) 2019, Bobby Doyle & William Murphy (Taghmon/Castlebridge) 2022 and Jamie Barnes & Jack Whitty (St.Marys/Taghmon) 2023, we struck again with Conor Doyle & Nathan Lawlor (Taghmon) who reaped the reward for consistency and proved far too strong for Eoin Dirrane & Cian Dillane (Galway) 21-12, 21-13 to win the second All Ireland of the day for the ‘Purple and Gold’. The boys have been a little unlucky over the years and I distinctly remember them leaving behind the Leinster 40x20 U-16 Doubles Final in Croke Park last year, but they weren’t to be denied this time round and after beating a tough Kilkenny pair in the Leinster Final and Michéal Enright & Zack Daly (Cork) in the All Ireland Semi-Final they won the concluding Final on Sunday evening with plenty to spare. Their participation in the Co.Wexford Adult 40x20 4-Wall Leagues & Championships was a contributory factor in their victory as they were far too experienced in the final analysis. Nathan has refereed and helped out in Wexford and nationally over a long period of time and he deserves his All Ireland while Conor created his own not insignificant piece of history to add to the storied tradition and Handball legacy attributable to the Doyle’s of Traceystown in that he became the third in a family of three boys to win a 40x20 4-Wall Juvenile All Ireland which and I didn’t forensically study the records, is possibly unmatched by any other family in Irish Handball history. Mark won U-14 Doubles in 2017 with Conor Murphy (Taghmon) while Bobby won U-17 Doubles in 2022 with William Murphy (Castlebridge). Certainly overlooked in Wexford Handball since March 09th, it is nothing short of a unique and remarkable treble for a family who have made an unparalleled contribution to Handball on Slaneyside in every aspect for over eighty years. Club and county juveniles who have trained in Traceystown over the last number of years wouldn’t be where they are today without the time and effort Robert & Helen have afforded them.
Very well done Conor & Nathan ~ played it hard and fair with a smile on their faces although ye did get thick in the Leinster Final with the Referee..😂
Thomas O’Brien (Castlebridge) was our other representative in Boys U-15 Singles but he lost out to eventual winner Tadgh O’Connor (Cork) in a tough All Ireland Semi-Final on the Saturday (08th March) but he showed more than enough to suggest he’s a player going places in the not-too-distant future.
As a footnote, it was beyond belief that the All Ireland 40x20 4-Wall Juvenile Finals (the biggest day of the year for Juveniles) clashed with high profile All Ireland 40x20 4-Wall Adult Open Semi-Finals on the same day at the same venue, nearly as bad as Team Ireland One Wall training in Croke Park last June on the same day as the All Ireland 60x30 Senior Singles Final.
Congratulations Victoria & Elsa and Conor & Nathan ~ you were terrific..🔵
Déanaimid comhghairdeas ó chroí libh, ba chóir daoibh a bheith bródúil as bhur n-éachtaí..💛💜
