The Irish ladies are absolutely on fire these days, records are being broken more than ever and this past weekend Nina McGowan was the Irish lady on the podium collecting the honours!
Competing at the Poseidon Games Depth Challenge, Nina set 3 new AIDA National Records over the course of the 3 competition days and not only that but she also secured herself the overall winning position on the podium with her 3 flawless dives!
Nina has based herself at Freedive Superhome in Panglao, Philipeans for the last few months, fully dedicating her time and energy to her freediving training. This location is a hotspot for serious freedivers and attracts athletes from all over the globe. So it should come as no surprise that all of this hard work has paid off.
Nina improved on Niamh Guilfoyles AIDA National Record of 35m from May of this year, first to 44m and then subsequently 46 meters in the no-fins (CNF) category. This also improves on Ninaโs own CMAS record from October 2022, meaning that she now holds the Irish CNF record under both AIDA & CMAS.
On day 2 of the Poseidon Depth Games, Nina took a rest from the physically demanding CNF discipline to test herself in the free-immersion (FIM) category, where the athlete uses the rope to pull themselves down and then back up again. Here she completed a spectacular dive to 58m, beating Kathy Macdonalds previous record of 55m set in Greece in September 2022.
When speaking about how she felt the competition went, Nina said; โSuper happy to set 3 new National Records. Delighted to get here as the old EQ (equalisation) was the stumbling block for a long time. I had a wee dance for myself when the ladies gave me my card for the photo! Very happy!โ
Weโre all looking forward to see whatโs to come from Nina in the future, what an exciting time for Irish Freediving.
