The Sika Rut Begins in Wicklow 🍂

There is a change coming over the Wicklow Mountains.
As September draws to a close, the Sika rut begins and one of Ireland’s great wildlife spectacles returns to the valleys and mountainsides we call home.

The distinctive whistle of the mature Sika stag begins to carry through the woodland and across the open hill, as stags search for hinds and challenge their rivals. The quiet of the mountain changes, and for those who know these hills, there is no mistaking that sound.

For us at Glacial Valley Hunting, this is our busiest and one of the most exciting times of the year. The Sika hunting season is underway, bringing with it everything from woodland stalking to the challenge of open hill hunting in the Wicklow Mountains.
After four generations hunting these mountains, there is still something incredibly special about this time of year.

The rut is beginning. Wicklow is calling.
