A great image from a 2011 study (cited below) that demonstrates the power exercise has on preserving muscle mass as we age.
In these axial MRI views of the thigh (imagine cutting the thigh in half and looking at a cross-section), we can see the increased degree of adipose/ fat and muscle atrophy in the sedentary man as compared to that of the triathlete of similar age.
Pretty convincing evidence to maintain a regular exercise program throughout your lifespan!
