What is your medicine?
As a chef, people often assume my medicine is the food I put on a plate.
They’re only partly right.
The food is simply the delivery system.
The real medicine is creating moments where people slow down, connect, nourish themselves, and remember something they had forgotten about themselves.
That made me wonder…
What is your medicine?
Not the medicine you consume.
The medicine you bring to the world.
Most of us spend our lives searching for the next thing that will heal us.
Another book.
Another podcast.
Another supplement.
Another retreat.
Another certification.
Another practice.
We’re constantly asking,
“What can I take?”
But perhaps the more important question is,
“What am I here to give?”
Your medicine isn’t just what you’re good at.
It’s the unique way your presence changes the people around you.
For some, it’s creating beauty.
For others, it’s bringing calm into chaos.
It’s listening without judgment.
Speaking truth with compassion.
Creating community.
Helping someone feel seen.
Inspiring courage.
Your medicine isn’t something you manufacture.
It’s something you uncover by removing everything that isn’t truly you.
Ironically, the more we focus on healing ourselves, the easier it is to forget that one of the most powerful forms of healing is becoming someone whose very presence heals others.
Maybe your greatest contribution isn’t consuming one more thing.
Maybe it’s having the courage to share the medicine that only you can bring.
So today, instead of asking,
“What do I need?”
Ask yourself,
“What medicine is life asking me to become, and to share?”

What if your biggest limitation isn’t a lack of knowledge…
What if it’s the operating system you’ve been unconsciously running for decades?
Think of your brain like the hardware of a computer.
Over the course of your life, it has been programmed with thousands of pieces of software—beliefs, stories, emotional patterns, survival strategies, and habits.
Some of those programs help you.
Others were installed during moments of fear, rejection, trauma, or uncertainty.
The problem is that most of them run automatically.
So we keep trying to solve the problem by downloading more information.
Another book.
Another podcast.
Another course.
Another retreat.
Another inspirational video.
But no amount of new information can replace a program that’s still running beneath your awareness.
If your nervous system has learned that the world isn’t safe…
that you’re not enough…
that love must be earned…
or that success requires struggle…
your body will keep acting out those programs long after your conscious mind decides to change.
That’s why awareness is only the beginning.
Real transformation isn’t about collecting more knowledge.
It’s about identifying the unconscious programs that no longer serve you, releasing them, and creating the conditions for your nervous system to embody a new way of being.
Information changes your mind.
Integration changes your nervous system.
Embodiment changes your life.
As a chef, I’ve learned that no recipe can overcome spoiled ingredients.
Life works the same way.
You can’t create inner freedom with unconscious beliefs that are constantly feeding fear, shame, guilt, or limitation.
Transformation isn’t just about changing what you feed your body.
It’s also about changing what has been feeding your consciousness.
Because in the end…
You don’t become what you know.
You become what you embody.

What if spirituality has become our newest addiction?
Not because spirituality is wrong.
But because we’ve learned to consume it instead of embody it.
We read another book.
We watch another YouTube video.
We listen to another podcast.
We attend another retreat.
We meditate.
We breathe.
We journal.
We chase the next insight, the next breakthrough, the next elevated experience.
And for a moment…
We feel lighter.
More peaceful.
More connected.
More loving.
But then life happens.
Someone criticizes us.
Traffic makes us impatient.
Our partner disappoints us.
Fear returns.
Control returns.
Judgment returns.
Why?
Because we’ve confused higher states with higher traits.
A state is temporary.
A trait is who you become.
Anyone can feel unconditional love during meditation.
Can you embody that love when someone hurts you?
Anyone can experience peace after a breathwork session.
Can you remain peaceful when life doesn’t go your way?
Anyone can feel oneness on a retreat.
Can you recognize that same oneness in the person who betrayed you?
Spiritual books, teachers, practices, and retreats are powerful.
But they were never meant to be the destination.
They were meant to become the bridge between insight and embodiment.
Transformation isn’t measured by the highest state you’ve reached.
It’s measured by the quality of your character when the experience is over.
The goal of spirituality isn’t to escape reality.
It’s to become someone who can meet reality differently.
Because at the end of the day…
People won’t remember how many books you’ve read.
How many retreats you’ve attended.
Or how many mystical experiences you’ve had.
They’ll experience the person you’ve become.
That’s the real spiritual practice.

What if you’re not tired because you lack energy…
What if you’re tired because your body is spending its energy trying to protect you?
Most of us assume we have an energy problem.
I’m beginning to think we have an allocation problem.
Your body isn’t simply producing energy.
It’s constantly responding to one fundamental question:
“Am I safe enough to grow, or do I need to survive?”
As a chef, I learned this lesson long before I realized it applied to life.
In every professional kitchen, there is a hierarchy.
Before the first plate goes out, the chef prepares the station. The French call it mise en place, everything in its place.
If the foundation isn’t ready, the meal falls apart.
I’ve come to believe our bodies work the same way.
When your nervous system is constantly preparing for danger, it diverts energy toward protection instead of growth.
Maybe that’s why so many of us feel exhausted.
Not because we aren’t trying hard enough.
Not because we lack discipline.
But because we’re spending enormous amounts of energy protecting ourselves from rejection, failure, uncertainty, or wounds our bodies still perceive as threats.
You don’t heal by forcing more energy into the body.
You heal by giving the body fewer reasons to defend itself.
This is why I’m passionate about plant-forward nutrition.
Not because food is a miracle cure.
Because nourishment is about more than what you eat. It’s also about the signals you give your body every day, through your thoughts, your relationships, your environment, your breath, and the choices you make.
Perhaps the better question isn’t:
“What should I eat?”
Perhaps it’s:
“What signals am I giving my body every single day?”
Because the goal isn’t simply to have more energy.
It’s to create the conditions where your body no longer has to spend so much of it protecting you.
Freedom is incredibly energy efficient.

For most of my life, I believed that fairness was one of the highest virtues.
Then life challenged that belief.
The world isn’t always fair.
Good people lose. Honest people are misunderstood. Loving parents face impossible situations. People manipulate the truth. Sometimes the outcome seems to reward the wrong behavior.
So what do we do?
The Kabbalists don’t ask, “Is life fair?”
They ask, “What is life trying to teach me through this experience?”
That’s a radically different question.
Justice still matters. We should stand for truth. We should protect the vulnerable. We should challenge injustice wherever we find it.
But if my peace depends on the world becoming fair before I can be happy, I’ll spend my life waiting.
David Hawkins wrote that, karmically, everything is fair. Kabbalah teaches that every challenge carries the potential for correction and growth. Neither perspective excuses harmful behavior. They simply remind us that our greatest freedom lies in how we respond.
Perhaps the real measure of consciousness isn’t whether life treats us fairly.
It’s whether we can continue to choose integrity when it doesn’t.
Because anyone can be loving when life is fair.
Character is revealed when it isn’t.
Maybe the deepest form of justice isn’t getting what we think we deserve.
Maybe it’s becoming someone that no injustice can corrupt.

Twenty people came for snacks, sips, and a Lake Michigan sunset.
They left with full hearts, new friendships, and perhaps a different way of thinking about food.
As we cleaned the kitchen afterward, something became even clearer to me.
Being a chef has never really been about cooking.
It’s about taking ordinary ingredients and transforming them into an experience. Life asks us to do exactly the same. Every challenge, every relationship, every setback, and every opportunity is an ingredient. The question is: What are you creating with them?
That’s why I believe learning to cook is also learning to live.
Rebecca and I loved co-creating a plant-forward menu designed to nourish both the body and meaningful conversation. Abby then transformed the space into something beautiful, reminding us that the environment shapes the experience just as much as the food itself.
But the highlight of the evening wasn’t the menu.
It was watching a room full of guests become a community.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the very first Snacks, Sips & Sunset such a meaningful evening. This feels less like a one-time event and more like the beginning of something we’re excited to build together.
Because in the end, the goal isn’t simply to become a better chef.
It’s to become the chef of your own life.

The Experience Begins Before the Event ✨
One of our favorite parts of creating Snacks, Sips & Sunset is what happens before anyone arrives.
Today, we spent the morning at the Douglas Farmers Market, exploring the incredible bounty our local farmers are growing right here in West Michigan. Fresh asparagus, juicy cherries, fragrant herbs, and countless ideas for Sunday’s menu.
Food tastes different when it has a story. When you know who grew it. When it was harvested just hours before it reaches your plate. When it reflects the season and the place you call home.
That’s what we’re creating on Sunday, not just a menu, but an experience rooted in community, connection, and appreciation for the abundance around us.
The event is officially sold out, and we’re feeling incredibly grateful.
Thank you to everyone who will be joining us for an evening of delicious plant-forward bites, refreshing mocktails, meaningful conversation, and a beautiful Lake Michigan sunset.
The preparations are in full swing, and we can’t wait to share it all with you.
