The first Indian gymnast to qualify for Olympic finals, Dipa Karmakar has received ₹25 lakh cash after returning the BMW she was presented as a reward for her performance. Karmakar had to return the car as her hometown Agartala did not have a BMW service centre. According to her coach, Karmakar has bought a Hyundai Elantra with the amount.

American Tennis player Serena Williams on Thursday announced her engagement to social news website Reddit's 33-year-old Co-founder Alexis Ohanian. While Williams announced her engagement via a poem in a Reddit post, Ohanian wrote on his page, "She said Yes". Williams, 35, has been dating Ohanian for over a year.
Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been named the ICC Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year during the year-end ICC awards. Ashwin, the top-ranked Test bowler and all-rounder, scored 612 runs and took 72 wickets in Tests this year, including eight five-wicket hauls. He is also the only Indian in the ICC Test team of the year.

Former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath got out on the first ball he faced in international cricket, in his debut Test match in 1993. The pacer again bagged a first-ball dismissal, called a golden duck, in his debut ODI match on December 9, 1993, against South Africa. Interestingly, McGrath was dismissed for zero 49 times in his international career.
