ON BEING AND BECOMING

I asked a majestic mountain
"For how long
Have you been
The way you are?
Have you ever thought
Of becoming better?"

The mountain smiled..
"I am what I am!
I have no clue how a mountain I became
Because I'm as old as my name..
I know I can't change!
Am destined to always being
What has become my meaning"

At the foot of the mountain
Stood a magnificent mango tree
"For how long
Have you been
The way you are?
Have you thought
Of becoming better?"

"Well", said the tree..
"I was once a mango flower
Then became a mango fruit
Then a seed that got buried
From where I sprouted
And grew bigger to become
The mango tree that's me

I don't know how to get better
Than being what I am..
I can't have anything more
Than what I have
Of the air light and water
And the soil I thrive on

When
I can't be anything but this
I can't see why I need anything else..
Me and my crop of mangoes people adore
Why should I ever be anything more?"

I smiled as I listened..
The tree wasn't yet finished..
"Can I ask you the same question?
You can't give me the same answer..
Am sure I can expect better.."

"What makes you so sure?"
I asked curiously..

"As a human being,
I know you can be
Much more
Than you have become"

"What makes you think
I can?"

"Don't you know, for you
'Becoming' is a journey?
To make that a destination,
Is that not a diminution
Of your blessing
To be born a human?
And to be and become
More than you've been given?"

"Hmm... Go on.. "

"I am born a mango tree..
To be just that and no more
For my destiny has nothing else in store.
But you are a privileged human,
You can be and become much more..
To live like me is to be naive
Because you can choose
From a wide range of options to 'behave'

Your doing so is to everyone's gain
For then,
Life on this planet will sustain
For all here.. you, me and the mountain!
And you definitely can!"

"Am touched" I said
Here and now, I take a vow..
'To be' is upto me
'To become' will be the process, and
'My behavior' is how I will make progress!

A team is not a group of people who occupy the same physical space, or department. A team is made up of people who have been chosen for what they can contribute, and who are allowed to contribute freely.

Each team member needs a voice that is heard. There needs to be trust and a culture of respect. And a team needs to be small in size.

But above all, it needs an objective.

Today's workforce demand that the work they undertake has meaning.. It resonates with their sense of worth, and is of interest.

But what exactly is it that is worth doing? Questions are the real starting points. This one sounds simple enough. But it is easier to pose than to answer, and vast sums of money can be wasted by starting with the wrong premise.

So then, what does it take to set goals, to achieve which a team is formed? 'Goal setting' is a one man job? Or is that team work too?

As age diversity at work increases, the impact of intergenerational differences on teamwork is of growing interest for organisations and professionals managing and developing teams.

Whilst we can acknowledge the value that complementary perspectives, approaches and experiences can bring to bear at work, it is clear that intergenerational differences can also be the source of communication difficulties, misunderstandings and conflicting priorities and values.

Belbin Team Role Methodology is an effective lens through which to study intergenerational differences, because it focuses on behavioural contributions, rather than relying on age-based assumptions or stereotypes.

Consider this for example:

Traditional wisdom suggests that younger people are more creative and older people are more strategic thinkers. A Belbin study revealed this need not be. Younger people do put on their thinking caps, in as much as older people do think outside the box.

In order to collaborate successfully in a multigenerational team, Belbin speaking teams learn to look past generational stereotypes, and seek areas of commonality, such as Team Role strengths (i.e) preferred behaviours.
