Volume targets for hypertrophy
One of the key points where coaches go wrong is that they pick up volume targets that are too high, hence it becomes too hard to maintain a good amount of intensity for each set and each set brings more and more fatigue as well.
These are again general ranges of sets, one can modify them as per their training status.
The graph shown in the second last slide is from a article by cheis beardsley, where he explains why low volume trauning for 2-3 times per week is a better idea the 1 high volume session.

Is exercise selection the most important part?
Without a doubt it is important. But not above ex*****on.
Performing the most optimal exerrcise at an RIR of 10 wont cause any growth but a exercise that is sub optimal that you enjoy and are training close to failure regularly 2 times per week will cause a lot of growth.
This doesnt mean running will cause muscle growth😂
Obviously exercise selection matters but you dont always need to pick the most optimal exercises, sometimes not so optimal exercises bcz you just enjoy them can be great as well
