Usually we use to get Sports Weapons for servicing and we deliver them as soon as possible depending upon the nature of the issue. We use to test and fix the firing velocity of the weapon in few hours and proceed with the other calibration procedures. But yesterday we received a weapon with a complaint that the paper target is getting torn at the back side. As usual we thought it could be an issue with imporoper velocity setting and accepted for servicing the same. But the weapon had strange behavior, and it took more time than expected to figure-out the fist stage of the most basic procedure of fixing the right velocity.

Within few shots the velocity dropped drastically from 388fps to 365fps(1) and lead us to the identification of leakage in the cylinder. It seems the shooter kept the cylinder tightly connected to the weapon for quite a long time inside the casing. It was tough and critical to release the cylinder from the weapon without even a small scratch. We found the internal washers were kept under pressure for quite a long time in one position and unused condition. This made the washers to go bad and brittle(2). Shooters must understand that if they have decided to keep the weapon unused for some time, then they need to release all the air from the cylinder and loosen the cylinder from the weapon.

However after the leakage correction, we tried to identify the right velocity so that it wont tear the paper target. We went down from 430fps to 250fps and found no satisfying result which is astonishing. Tried with different branded cards and doubled the cards to see some improvement, but no use. Then, finally set the velocity at 380fps which gave some better result(but not satisfactory) and informed the same to the shooter when handing over the weapon. A shot at 100% cylinder capacity will come down few clicks when shot at 50% cylinder capacity. The shooter must know this for their weapon to get better result in the tournament score. As a servicing engineer we can guide them to achieve that in the tournament where they shoot continuously.

But after servicing, I am unable to stop thinking why I didn't get a perfect result in-spite of taking such effort from checking at different possible velocity(450-250fps) levels. Then wanted to investigate further to find the cause and solution. For that I must understand the following:
1)Role of Velocity in score
2)Why not the tried Velocity(450-250fps) affect the paper target in getting a perfect circle.

1)Role of Velocity in score:
The role the velocity plays in the paper target systems Vs electronic target systems must be discussed. In the paper target system, the judgement of score is based on the visual inspection and hand-tools usage when accuracy is needed in taking decision. But in the electronic target systems, the score is determined by sensors acoustically which is automatically converted into corresponding scores by a computer. Here, we need to investigate further in-depth on how the acoustic quality differs for the same shot when varying the velocity.

We have to confirm that any two bullets/pellets hitting the same location on the electronic target area with different velocity makes no differences in the score calculated by the electronic target system. IT MUST BE THAT WAY ONLY FROM ENGINEERING POINT OF VIEW AND THERE IS NO OTHER GO. In that case velocity has no connection with the score being recorded.

Conclusion:
Though the velocity affects the position of shot being plotted on the target area, it does only from the Shooters'/weapons' perspective and not the score measuring system. From the score measuring system perspective, it will measure where it hit the target position only and not how fast/slow it hit.

However in the Electronic Target system, I need to understand further the whole science behind how the machine identifies the position of the shot being plotted on the target area and what role the velocity plays in the decision making algorithm.

2)Why not the tried Velocity(450-250fps) affect the paper target in getting a perfect circle:
This I am still trying to understand. Will post when I find some solid reason. You can post your points if anything comes to your mind.
