INTRODUCTION
Set up in 1992 in the city of Chennai,ROSHNI is a registered, non-governmental, non-profit organization working for the Welfare and Development of Women and Children. ROSHNI is committed to educate women and children who are denied the opportunity of education due to socio economic reasons. ROSHNI helps all and does not distinguish between religion, caste
or creed. The institution was given life by a group of strong and dynamic women with its secretary being an eminent lawyer and educationalist who is known for her selfless service. Interestingly all the members of the organization come from various walks of life, each with one solid dream of bringing about a change in the lives of the deprived. Additional help is provided for working women through crèches so they can work while their children are in safe hands. ROSHINI also provides home for the destitute and distressed women along with old age homes. ROSHNI works with 145 Self-Help groups benefitting 1800 women from the program. Most of these women have gained monetary independence either by working in organizations or their own enterprises. ROSHNI networks with other NGO's in India and in the region that have similar objectives in empowering women with particular emphasis directed towards women of the minority community. ROSHNI organises and conducts workshops, seminars and conferences to promote its objectives. Holds public hearing of marginalised women and also submits position papers concerning minority women to national and international bodies. ROSHNI designs and conducts programmes like Self Help Groups, Adult Literacy, economic and social empowerment of downtrodden women, training programmes and works for getting placement for socially and economically backward women, teaching and helping them to learn tolerance amongst their community along with the importance of independence and education.
