Who according to you has been the best Indian captain ever?

05/01/2013

Dhoni was the only India batsman who
showed form in the previous two
matches. He has scored 167 runs - 106
more than Suresh Raina, who is second -
in the series without being dismissed.
Only twice in his career before he has
been ruled out due to injury. Both times,
it was the back problem that kept him
out - once against New Zealand in Napier
and against Bangladesh in Chittagong. In
2012, Dhoni missed two matches
because of over-rate penalties, but
played every other series, including the
IPL and Champion League Twenty20.

India's Under-19 World Cup winners::

Some of these players might go on to become household names. TOI profiles India's World Cup winners...

UNMUKT CHAND: Led the team by example. In the final, against hosts and defending champions Australia, he displayed exemplary class and returned with an unbeaten 111 to guide India home. In doing that he followed his illustrious Delhi counterpart Virat Kohli, who also led India to victory in the 2008 edition in Kuala Lumpur. His attacking style of play has also earned him a contract with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.

AKSHDEEP NATH: Though he didn't have the kind of World Cup his skipper Unmukt enjoyed, Akshdeep certainly has the talent to go the distance. The 19-year-old from Lucknow made his list A debut against Vidarbha in February last year. He was picked in India's squad because of sterling performances at the junior level and few notable first class performances. Watch out for him.

PRASHANT CHOPRA: He comes from Himachal Pradesh and made his Ranji debut against Punjab in February last year. He was picked in India's U-19 squad purely on his batting abilities. The right-hander chipped in with valuable contributions, including a 52 in the semis against New Zealand.

SANDIPAN DAS: The Bengal lad didn't feature in many matches. In the only match he played against Sri Lanka, he could score just 4. Das still has to make his Ranji Trophy debut.

AKHIL HERWADKAR: Just 17, Akhil already has many fans. He has been a heavy scorer at the junior level and earned a call up to Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad last year, though he didn't get to play.

RUSH KALARIA: For the Rajkot boy, this was a last chance to impress at the junior level. But he didn't get picked apart from the practice matches where he scored 21 against Lanka.

KAMAL PASSI: At just over 19, this medium pacer from Amritsar has not yet made his first class debut. But at the junior level, he has been an economical and successful bowler. In Australia, Passi was a revelation, picking up 10 wickets, including a best of 6-23 against Zimbabwe. For the lad nicknamed Pistol, a Ranji berth should be the next goal.

SMIT PATEL: The gloveman from Ahmedabad accounted for 14 dismissals and made vital contributions with the bat, none more crucial than the unbeaten 62 he scored in the final. He also scored a fighting half-century in a losing cause against West Indies in the first match. He will be a marked man by the selectors as his keeping is clean and he has a terrier-like spirit.

SANDEEP SHARMA: The swing and seam hero. In the final against Australia, Sharma's 4-54 was largely responsible in restricting Australia to 225. Apart from being an intelligent bowler, Sharma can also wield the willow effectively.

HANUMA VIHARI: The 18-year-old right hand batsman from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh could have had a better World Cup. Barring the 64 against Sri Lanka in the warm-up game and the 31 against Zimbabwe, he had nothing more to offer. But while playing for Hyderabad, Vihari has proved he has the ability to shine.

VIKAS MISHRA: In the three matches that the left-arm-spinner played in Australia, he managed to pick two wickets. His best bowling performance was against Papua New Guinea where he picked up 1/33. He has already made it to Delhi's Ranji squad.

VIJAY ZOL: This Jalna boy made it to the headlines after scoring an unbeaten 451 for Maharashtra Under-19 against Assam. His feat was unique because he became the first batsman to garner the highest score in the history of the Cooch Behar trophy. In Australia, Zol scored two half centuries.

BABA APARAJITH: He shone both with bat and ball. If there was someone as consistent as skipper Unmukt, it had to be Aparajith. He scored three half centuries and struck with the ball at vital times. The 18-year-old from Chennai has the talent to go a long way.

HARMEET SINGH: People in Mumbai feel that this left-arm-spinner should have already been playing in the Ranji Trophy. He bowls with a still head and has a deceptive loop. Captained the Mumbai Under-22 team to victory in the Cooch Behar Trophy last year

RAVIKANT SINGH: Like Passi, this Bengal pacer too is yet to play in the Ranji Trophy. His performances Down Under though served plenty of notice about his talent. Singh returned with a 12-wicket haul including a terrorizing spell of 5/21 against Papua New Guinea.

Dhoni slips one place in ICC ODI Rankings::

DUBAI: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni slipped one spot down to fifth while his deputy Virat Kohli remained static at third in the latest ICC ODI batsmen's chart released on Sunday.

Dhoni now shares the fifth spot with England ODI captain Alastair Cook, who impressed in the home series against the West Indies. Both have 752 points to their credit in the list headed by Hashim Amla (871) of South Africa.

Kohli has 846 points to his credit. The only other Indian batsman in the top 20 is Guatam Gambhir who remained unchanged at 17th spot on 666 points.

Amomg bowlers, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the lone Indian in the top 10 as jumped one place to fifth with 676 points in the list still headed by Lonwabo Tsotsobe of South Africa (743 points).

Meanwhile, in the Reliance ICC ODI Championship table, India are at third spot with 117 rating points behind Australia (123) and South Africa (118).

England and Sri Lanka are now on 112 ratings points each, but the former is ranked above in fourth position when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

Virat Kohli prefers to be seen as a youngster::

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli might be enjoying much-needeed break at the momet. Following a stupendous last season, the recent Indian batting sensation is staying focused to build on his form. He even turned up for his office team ONGC in the Lala Raghubir Hot weather tournament in Delhi last week.

Looking ahead, with the Indian Test middle-order set to have a new look in the upcoming season and him having cemented his place ahead of the Cheteshwar Pujaras and Rohit Sharmas, Kohli says he is up for the responsibility of being the mainstay of the batting.

"Personally, I love responsibilities. I don't think there is any fun without pressure. But talking about the vacancies, I feel all six-seven of us (contenders for the Test spot) fall in the same group with Rohit Sharma being the most talented. I hope all of us can take the responsibility of the Indian batting line-up and I see them as my future colleagues," remarked Kohli while adding that the 10 Test matches in India will help the young batsmen (whosoever gets the chance) to settle down.

However, on a personal front, he looks to start from zero in the new season.

With a barrage of accolades showered on him and now that Rahul Dravid not there in the batting line-up, does Virat Kohli see himself as a senior batsman now? Well, he prefers to be seen as a youngster. "You don't become a senior batsman overnight with two-three months of performances. It takes six-seven years to be one. But it is a big responsibility with Rahul bhai not there and I am willing to bat anywhere in the order. I see myself as the youngster who came into the team few years ago," Kohli asserted.

Given the fact that India are slated to play more limited-over games before the Tests begin, Kohli believes it's up to individuals to have practice sessions and work on their game.

"Depends on individuals on how they want to prepare. I would love to have long practice sessions. Rahul Dravid is one of great legends. It will be a great challenge to maintain the consistency in," said Kohli.

Virender Sehwag to make ODI comeback:

NEW DELHI: When India played the last ODI tournament in Asia Cup Indian opener Virender Sehwag was rested on fitness ground and there was speculation that he was dropped on account of his lackluster form with the bat in the Australian series.

But after a commendable performance with the bat in the IPL, the Delhi dasher is all set to make a comeback into the Indian ODI team when the selectors pick the squad for the five-match Sri Lankan series, which will also have a one-off T20 match.

Sources said that the selection committee is likely to pick the squad in the first week of July and will select a side keeping in mind the upcoming World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka this September.

"He wasn't fully fit for the Asia Cup. During the Australian tri-series, he was regularly treated for his shoulder injury and so the selector thought it fit to rest him. But in the IPL, he was simply brilliant," a source told TOI. In this year's IPL, Sehwag, who led Delhi Daredevils, scored 495 runs with five consecutive fifties from 16 matches.
