The Ellora Caves are a remarkable complex of rock-cut caves located in the state of Maharashtra, India. They are renowned for their stunning architecture and historical significance, representing a fusion of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain cultures.

1. Historical Period: The caves were built between the 6th and 10th centuries CE.

2. Cave Complex: There are 34 caves in total—12 Buddhist (Caves 1-12), 17 Hindu (Caves 13-29), and 5 Jain (Caves 30-34).

3. Kailasa Temple: Cave 16, known as the Kailasa temple, is the most famous and one of the largest rock-cut temples in the world. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and carved entirely out of a single rock.

4. Architectural Significance: The caves exhibit intricate carvings and architectural designs, showcasing advanced craftsmanship and artistic skills of ancient Indian builders.

5. UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Ellora Caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, recognizing their cultural and historical importance.

The Ellora Caves are a testament to the religious harmony and architectural prowess of ancient India, making them a significant heritage site.
