A nation’s sports policy is not merely a medal policy. It is a health policy, an education policy, an economic policy all rolled in one.

One of the strongest arguments for investing in youth sport has very little to do with Olympic medals and everything to do with building healthier, more productive and more resilient societies.

Researchers increasingly view sport as a form of social infrastructure, much like education or public health.

Children who participate in organised sports show lower rates of addiction and risky behaviour later in life. Sport provides something every young mind needs: structure, identity, positive role models, friendships and a sense of belonging.

Children who play sports are far more likely to remain physically active as adults, leading to better health, improved mental well-being, greater longevity and lower healthcare costs for society.

But the benefits go far beyond physical health.

Sport teaches children how to deal with failure, work with others, delay gratification, handle pressure, lead, compete with dignity and persevere when things do not go their way. These are qualities that no textbook can teach and no examination can measure.

Societies with strong sporting cultures consistently produce healthier citizens, better educational outcomes, more productive workforces and stronger communities. They spend less on preventable diseases and more building prosperous nations.

This is what our country needs.

We do not need more qualified but ordinary people.

We need healthy minds, strong bodies, resilient individuals and people who know how to strive, fail, adapt and rise again. People who can lead, collaborate, withstand setbacks and continue to move forward when life becomes difficult.

Give your children the gift of sport.

Not because they will all become champions.

But because the habits, values and mental toughness they develop through play may prove to be far more valuable than any medal.

And perhaps the most beautiful part is that children already love doing it.
