The National Sports Club of India is a sprawling institution right in the centre of the city. The Iron Man of Modern India. The club has its own history, associated with the eminent leaders of free India, who with great vision and foresight formulated the policy of promoting games and sports in the country. Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and other eminent & well known sports personalit
ies such as Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Maharajas of Patiala, Viziangram, Nawanagar, Nawab of Pataudi, General K. Cariappa, G. Birla, and Naval Tata were only among the few patrons of the club, with A.S. D’Mello as Secretary General. The Second Club was set up in Mumbai at the present location in 1950. Originally, the club had just a club house & vast velodrome stadium named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The foundation stone of a proper & well developed club house complex was laid by Shri Y. B. Chavan, First Chief Minister of Maharashtra, on May 17, 1957. The Club began with few sports such as tennis, badminton & regular bouts of free style wrestling competitions. For many years, Dara Singh & King Kong were household names associated with Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium which also had a cycling track. It was only in the 80’s that real spurt took place in improving the facilities & extending sports activities in the club. It initiated setting up facilities for Billiards, Table Tennis, Badminton, Carrom and well equipped Ladies & Gents Health clubs along with coaching classes in various games, including judo, Karate & Aerobics. The club has also upgraded dining and recreational facilities by providing high grade restaurants, permit rooms, card room, reading room, and lounges, a consumer store where daily household items & groceries are sold. The regular film shows on Sunday evenings and two housie sessions every week, caters to the leisure activities of the esteemed members. Besides, the club organizes Kavi Sammelans, Musical Evenings, Rain Dance, Food Festivals & many more....
The Club is even more futuristic and always willingly adopting new technologies in serving the members with the help of their IT (Information Technology) department. Security being the prime concern of today's times our surveillance department works round the clock.
