Focus on the Light

The darkest day of my life was also the brightest. I want to encourage you, especially with what you've gone through this year, to focus on the light.

I was 11 years old. It was in December that my father was beating up my Jewish mother, calling her a w***e, telling her that I was not his son, and shouting that she had an affair with a Jewish man. It was about 1:30 in the morning. I cried out to protect her, "Stop it!"

He ran up the stairs and strangled me, lifting me far above his head. As I looked into those bloodshot eyes, I thought my life was over. This was on a Friday.

On Tuesday of that week, the teacher asked all the kids in class, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I was the last one to answer.

Stuttering, I said, "20." Why? I never thought I'd live to be 20 years old because of my father's abuse. When I woke up from strangulation, I was in a fetal position. I had vomited all over myself. Every finger from my dad's hand was outlined on my neck because he had pressed so hard that the blood came through.

But in the darkness, I cried out, not in faith, but in anger. "God, why was I born?" I saw no reason for my life. My father hated me. My mother was being abused because of me.

Suddenly, the brightest light I had ever seen in my life appeared. Out of that bright light, a miracle took place. It was a miracle that transformed my life forever.

It was a miracle that has given me strength and hope and peace in every storm. A miracle that, in spite of all my limitations, has made it possible for me to impact nations, for the glory of God. I encourage you this Christmas season to focus on the light. God can turn your pain into power and passion, as he has in my life.
