NEW LAWS OF THE GAME 2026/27 – Know the Changes! ⚽

The Laws of the Game continue to evolve to protect the spirit of football, improve match management, and promote respect for match officials.

Key updates include:
✅ Mouth-covering during confrontations may result in a red card.
✅ Walking off the field in protest against a referee’s decision may result in a red card.
✅ 5-second countdown for goal kicks and throw-ins to prevent time-wasting.
✅ Substituted players must leave the field within 10 seconds.
✅ Injured players who receive on-field treatment must remain off the field for at least 60 seconds after play restarts (except where exceptions apply).

These amendments aim to increase fairness, reduce unnecessary delays, and improve discipline throughout the game.

The SFA Referee Committee encourages all referees, players, coaches, and team officials to familiarize themselves with these important changes before the start of the new season.

Congratulations to Mr. Subash Tamang!

The Sikkim Referee Committee extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Subash Tamang on being elected as the Head of Referees (HOR) for the 2026–2030 term.

We also express our sincere gratitude to the outgoing HOR, Mr. Chamchuk Lama, for his dedicated service, leadership, and invaluable contributions to the growth and development of refereeing in Sikkim. His efforts have laid a strong foundation for the future.

As Mr. Subash Tamang takes on this important responsibility, we wish him every success in leading the referee fraternity with vision, integrity, and commitment. We are confident that under his leadership, the standard of refereeing in Sikkim will continue to grow and achieve greater milestones.

When a player/team is delaying the taking of a throw-in or goal kick, the referee may use their whistle and/or voice to indicate that the player/team should hurry up and not delay the restart.

To start the five-second countdown (which may start without the above cue) the referee:
➡ blows the whistle
➡ signals clearly with their hand/arm for the restart to be taken
➡ visually counts down from five seconds with a raised hand; this visual countdown may be accompanied by a verbal countdown where appropriate

The countdown from five to zero:
➡ helps the team avoid exceeding the five-second limit (and conceding a throw-in, or a corner kick if the goal kick is delayed)
➡ signals to the thrower’s/kicker’s team-mates to get into position to receive the ball before the countdown ends.
