Dr. Kanishka Pandey had a pleasant and engaging discussion with Shri Ashish Kundra, Chief Secretary, Union Territory of Ladakh, on the evolving sports ecosystem in Ladakh and the immense possibilities that lie ahead.

They exchanged thoughts on grassroots development, football development, sports education, capacity building, sports tourism and creating greater opportunities through sport. Ladakh’s unique geography, vibrant youth and sporting potential offer exciting possibilities for building a distinctive and sustainable sports ecosystem.

He accompanied by Ms. Tsering Angmo, GS of Ladakh Football Association and her team.

A significant moment for the Right to Sports.

The Hon’ble Supreme Court heard the PIL seeking recognition of the Right to Sports as a Fundamental Right under Article 21A of the Constitution of India.

For us, sport is much more than medals or elite performance. It is about ensuring that every child has the opportunity to play, participate, grow and develop through sport.

As the Hon’ble Supreme Court observed:
“This is a laudable request. This is absolutely essential.”

The journey towards making sport an integral part of every child’s life continues. 🇮🇳

A tournament sacrificed for a friendly? Indian football deserves an explanation. ⚽🇮🇳

India has withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 to prioritise an international friendly against Brazil in Kolkata. AIFF has confirmed that the scheduling clash means India cannot participate in both.

Playing Brazil is undoubtedly exciting. But giving up a competitive tournament—where India would have faced Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore—for one friendly is difficult to understand. For a football-loving country struggling for international results, our players need more competitive match exposure, not less.

More worrying is the message this sends internationally. India had accepted the invitation; indeed, India’s participation had already contributed to the SAFF Championship being shifted to another window. Now we have withdrawn. Such reversals raise legitimate questions about planning and professionalism.

And since the ASEAN Cup has been sacrificed for Brazil, one hopes the agreement with the Brazilian Football Confederation is watertight—that Brazil will field its strongest possible squad, rather than a substantially weakened side. Reports suggest such a commitment exists; that must translate onto the pitch.

A Brazil friendly can create headlines.

But Indian football cannot be built on headlines. It needs planning, competitive exposure, consistency and credibility.

At a time when Indian football desperately needs direction, we must ask: was sacrificing a tournament really worth one friendly?

Indian football deserves a serious conversation on accountability.

Kalyan Chaubey was elected AIFF President in September 2022. India ended that year 106th in the FIFA rankings. There was an encouraging rise to 99th in 2023, but the trajectory since then has been worrying: 126th at the end of 2024, 142nd in 2025, and 138th in the latest July 2026 ranking.

At the AFC Asian Cup 2023, played in 2024, India lost all three group matches—to Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria—finishing with zero points and without scoring a single goal.

Then came the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. India suffered a 1–2 home defeat to Afghanistan, were held 0–0 by Kuwait in Kolkata, and eventually failed to reach the third round after losing 1–2 to Qatar.

Administrations should not be judged by speeches, promises or announcements alone. They must ultimately be judged by results, direction and progress.

There may be explanations for individual defeats. There may be factors beyond the control of any one administrator. But after nearly four years, football supporters are entitled to ask:

Has Indian football progressed under this administration?

And if the measurable indicators continue to move in the wrong direction, then another question becomes unavoidable:

Why should the leadership continue without being held accountable for the results?

Indian football is bigger than any individual or office.

It deserves answers. It deserves accountability. And most importantly, it deserves progress. ⚽✌

India’s sports goods manufacturers must continue expanding globally. But perhaps the bigger question is this:

Have we truly unlocked India’s own domestic demand for sports?

A nation of 1.4 billion people should not just manufacture for the world—it should also play more, move more, and consume more sport.

Should Indian cricket’s surplus benefit only cricket?

I completely support pension schemes for first-class and domestic cricketers. Many dedicated their lives to the game without earning substantial incomes, and they deserve financial security after retirement.

However, I struggle to understand the need for pensions for former international Test cricketers, many of whom have already earned significant sums representing India through match fees, contracts, and endorsements.

Imagine the impact if even a fraction of cricket’s financial strength was invested in Olympic sports, para-sports, indigenous games, grassroots infrastructure, coaches, sports science, and young athletes who continue to struggle for opportunities.

This is not about taking anything away from cricket or its legends. It is about asking a larger question:

Can Indian cricket become the biggest benefactor of Indian sport?
