Ariana Huffington in her TED talk highlights an important point about the link between Sleep and Job Performance. ๐Ÿ˜Š

She says that we live in a culture where living on less sleep is publicized as something Macho. Every day, people boast that they have slept less yet delivered on tasks or even claim they completed an important task by cutting down on sleep.

Have you heard of this saying, โ€œ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’† ๐’‚๐’“๐’† ๐’๐’ ๐‘ญ๐’“๐’†๐’† ๐‘ณ๐’–๐’๐’„๐’‰๐’†๐’”โ€?

Cutting down on sleep to complete your work has severe long-term consequences.

In the book โ€œThe Compound Effect,โ€ Darren Hardy raises an important point: bad habits do not show instant results.

Imagine if, by smoking a cigarette, you saw immediate bad healthโ€”no one would smoke. However, the harmful effects of smoking compound over time, leading to diseases that appear only after months or years of smoking.

Similarly, cutting down on sleep wonโ€™t show immediate negative outcomes. Instead, you might see benefits like recognition for completing tasks. ๐Ÿ˜ด But the harmful effects of sleep deprivation also compound, eventually leading to:

1) Lower short-term memory retention
2) Digestion issues
3) Pressure to work against the body
4) Micro-sleeping at crucial moments, which could cost your life

I deeply connect with the point on microsleep. Iโ€™ve had 2-3 instances of thisโ€”luckily, Iโ€™m alive, but things could have gone wrong.

In short, cutting down on sleep is not an option.

Tom Rath beautifully summarized sleep in one statement:

I was recently chatting with a person who appreciated my work.

He said, "My sleep is manageable. If I have any sleep problems, I will contact you."

It was satisfying that I got recognized as an expert on this topic.

But as much as I would love to have a client, I would be happier if the issue were prevented because, as the saying goes, "Prevention is better than cure."

One of my clients understood how the brain works and was amazed that even a CEO could think like him. He did not beat himself up previously he always used to beat himself.

I was recently coming back home. We had our dinner, and at almost 11 p.m., I noticed that the traffic police were checking for drivers who had consumed alcohol.

I agree that the risk of drinking and driving is dangerous because the ability to respond is impaired.

I remember seeing multiple billboards saying, โ€œDo not drink and drive.โ€

But there is a far greater risk of driving when you are sleep-deprived. ๐Ÿ˜ด

My scariest moment was when I was at the wheel and had a micro-sleep. I am lucky to tell this story because anything could have happened.

So before you get behind the wheel, donโ€™t drive if you drink, but also exercise caution when you are sleep-deprived, because the risk can be far more dangerous. And the scary partโ€”no one is there to catch you and stop you from driving. ๐Ÿš—.

In this hue and cry where people glamourize sleep deprivation. I was chatting with a CEO and he said โ€œInstead of Sleeping I can talk to some of my team โ€.

While it is a rarity, less than 1% of people can live with less sleep.

Why?

In short, you can get videos or advice (strategy) for free. But where most people fall flat is the lack of a supportive, non-judgmental environment. โฃ

Before making any choice, always value your support system more than the strategy. Because strategy is widely available for free, achieving meaningful progress becomes difficult without the right support system. ๐Ÿ’ก

Thanks to many jobs in the IT industry, people enjoy 2 days off every week. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Compared to manufacturing jobs and even academic roles, where teachers need to work 6 days a week, IT professionals are relatively lucky in that regard.โฃ

However, Iโ€™ve seen many people in the IT industry drastically change their routines over the weekend.โฃPeople sleep until 11 AM, sometimes even noon, saying they need to make up for the lost sleep from weekdays. ๐Ÿ˜ดโฃ

Some even argue that the math adds up, meaning they've fulfilled their weekly sleep quota.โฃ

Hereโ€™s how they calculate it:โฃ

56 hours of sleep a week = 8 hours x 7 daysโฃ

But on weekdays: 5 x 7 = 35 hours (assuming 7 hours of sleep per night)โฃ

On weekends: 2 x 10 = 20 hours (assuming 10 hours per night)โฃ

So, 35 + 20 = 55 hours for the week. Seems close enough, right?โฃ

While this looks fine mathematically, sleep doesnโ€™t work that way. Let me explain with an analogy:โฃ

Imagine you're a painter, and every day, you need to complete one painting. ๐ŸŽจโฃ

On Monday, you start painting but donโ€™t finish it.โฃ

On Tuesday, you start another painting, but it also remains incomplete.โฃ

This pattern continues throughout the week, each day leaving unfinished work behind.โฃ

By Saturday's arrival, you have the extra time to finish one or two paintings.

But on Monday, you're back to starting fresh work, and unfinished paintings pile up again.

โฃ

The reality? Youโ€™ll unlikely catch up on everything, no matter how hard you try over the weekend.โฃ

This analogy helps explain why you canโ€™t make up for lost sleep over the weekend. ๐Ÿ’คโฃ

The brain can only recover from sleep lost over the last 1 or 2 days. Even if you sleep longer over the weekend, the damage from several nights of poor sleep can't fully be undone.โฃ

Sleep math isnโ€™t a simple linear equationโ€”many complex processes occur during sleep that canโ€™t be caught up later.โฃ

If thereโ€™s one key takeaway here:โฃ
