In 1891, at Khongjom, Manipur, 300 valiant Manipuri soldiers led by Paona Brajabashi stood against the British. The British themselves recorded it as one of the fiercest battles in Indian history.
You may recall the legendary 300 Spartans under Leonidas who fought thousands of Persians, or the 300 Marathas led by Bajiprabhu Deshpande who resisted a 12,000-strong Adilshahi force in 1660. Manipur too has its own tale of unmatched courage.
At Khongjom, after 299 Manipuri warriors attained martyrdom, Paona Brajabashi fought on alone until he was captured. Impressed by his valor, the British commander offered him a choice: a high post with wealth if he joined their ranks, or death if he refused.
Paona Brajabashiโs reply was unwavering: โDeath is more welcome than treason.โ He was executed on the battlefield, immortalizing his sacrifice as a symbol of honor and resistance.
