When artwork wraps a carton, the corners are where you find out if it worked.

This illustration runs continuously across four faces. Every fold has to land exactly where the design allows, or you get a break in the linework right at the corner — the first thing anyone notices and the last thing anyone forgives.

Illustrated skin tones are the other risk. They shift further off-target than flat colour does, and there’s no correcting them once the run is going. So they get proofed on the real stock before press, not signed off from a PDF.

Dust bags get judged after the sale, not before.

The customer keeps the product. The outer box usually goes in the bin. The dust bag lives in a wardrobe for years — which makes it the piece of your packaging with the longest life and, almost always, the least attention paid to it.

Screen-printed rather than heat-transferred, because transfer cracks after a few washes and a cracked logo is worse than no logo. Matching hang tag on uncoated stock so the paper and the fabric feel like they came from the same brand.

Fabric is packaging too.

Tissue is the layer most brands skip and every customer touches first.

Thin on purpose. It has to drape over a product, crumple in the hand, and make the right sound when it is pushed aside. Anything heavier behaves like wrapping paper, which is a completely different feeling and a worse one.

The wordmark repeats across the whole sheet rather than sitting centred, so it reads no matter how it is folded. Packers do not fold carefully.

Six brands, one floor, one week.

Velvet for jewellery. Unbleached cotton for the sustainability brief. Satin cord throughout, because cotton cord frays at the tip and there is no fixing it after.

A box gets recycled at best. A pouch gets kept — which makes it the longest-lived thing you will ever print your logo on.

Velvet gets judged in the hand before it’s judged by the eye.

Two things go wrong with velvet pouches and neither shows up in a spec sheet. First, pile direction — velvet reflects light differently depending on which way the nap runs, so two pouches cut from opposite orientations arrive as two visibly different teals. The whole run gets cut one way.

Second, foil. Velvet needs a cooler die than paper, because the pile flattens before the foil sets. Get it wrong and you get a shiny bald patch where the logo should be.

Satin cord throughout. Cotton frays at the tip and there’s no fixing it after.

Minimal packaging isn’t less work. It’s less forgiveness.

When there’s one line of white type on bare kraft, every flaw is the only thing on the surface. A crease landing slightly off. A fold that bows. Ink density drifting between the start and the end of a run. On a busy box nobody sees any of it. On this one, it’s the entire design.

Two sizes, and the type had to carry the same optical weight on both — which meant setting it twice rather than scaling it once. Scaled type looks wrong at the second size and most people can’t say why.

The hardest part of this box was not the print. It was the pull.

A drawer box has to open smoothly the first time, every time — cold hands, in a hurry, one-handed. Too tight and it feels cheap. Too loose and it works itself open in transit.

Rigid board, side-pull drawer, die-cut insert sized to each piece. No tape, no tearing, no plastic in the structure.

A drawer box has to open smoothly the first time, every time — cold hands, in a hurry, one-handed. Too tight and it feels cheap. Too loose and the drawer works itself open in transit.
