The London System is an opening system in chess that can be used against virtually any black defence.
Similar is the case with Harsh Dwivedi when it came to choosing board orders in inter-college tournaments. From a late entrant into the club in his 3rd year to being the top pick in inter-college tournaments, he certainly did cover a lot in very less time.
From winning the IIT BHU Candidates to getting a perfect score in both the outfests that he played ( Udghosh 21 and Spardha 21), Harsh Dwivedi had a short but marvellous college chess career
His online chess exploits are a different thing to boast about, winning several Pan IIT tournaments, powering the college team through tournaments like AICL, he has done a lot in the online era of chess which covid caused.
Not only a force to reckon on the board, but he was also a senior who helped the club grow, increase the general skill level of the club and in the end, was a great mentor.
Goodbyes are hard, harder is to fill the void in the club now that he is leaving, still, we wish him a great future and hope to see him again in online Inter College Tournaments as an alum

Goodbyes make you think. They make you realize what you’ve had, what
you’ve lost, and what you’ve taken for granted. What we had was one of
the strongest players across all IITs, an encyclopedia of chess, and above
all a great senior.
This post is about Utkarsh Dubey (Utkarsh Dubey), Mechanical Engineering batch-2017. He
was the captain of the club for the year 2019-20. In many ways he is the
godfather of this club, seeing it transform from a small obscure Club of 7-8
people to one of the most performing clubs of the Council in the last few
years. Besides, he is also the one who named the club – Petrosian’s
Legacy, after one of his favorite players whose books and photos you can
see lying around his room.
Over the years his playing style changed as he grew from an attacking
player who loved to sacrifice to a more solid and positional master. His
knowledge of the game surpasses any player on the circuit-chances are if
you ask him about the Fischer vs Spassky match, he would play the moves
out for you. Beyond all this, he is a true lover of chess at heart and can be
seen engaging with his juniors and colleagues over various lines and
positions. He is benevolent in his demeanor to the newcomers, accepting
everybody who loves the game and imparting his knowledge without bias.
He set the tone for us through his success in various tournaments like
winning consecutive Gold medals in Spardha 2019-20 and 2021-22 or
leading the team to its best performance in the Inter IITs in 2019 or winning
the Kasparov Cup or his latest – runners up in the Collegiate Chess
League, I can go on and on but you realize what a force he has been on
the chessboard over the years.
Despite all these achievements, he is a really humble and supportive
senior. We can recall our conversations where he advised us about life in
general and helped us with decisions be it career-related or chess-related,
just like an elder brother. He is an inspiration for many of us for his
dedication and enthusiasm for the game.
Now, with the end of his college days, it is hard to bid him goodbye, but all
good things must come to an end. We will cherish the memories and
remember the lessons. Good Luck for your future and Farewell!

“Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win”

As the Collegiate Chess League (CCL) finally draws to a close, we are proud to announce that our IIT BHU Chess Team A has finished as the Runner’s Up in this illustrious University tournament.

The finals itself was a hard-fought contest, with our team narrowly going down to the Northeastern University with the final score being 7.5-8.5.

But the team showed exceptional grit and determination to fight on until the last breath, with the host & famous streamer Eric Rosen also praising the spirited effort we put up.

This stupendous performance also cements the place of IIT BHU as having one of the best college chess teams in the whole Country and brings us immense pride and joy. Congratulations to all the players and looking forward to seeing you ace all the upcoming tournaments!

Greetings from the Chess Club, IIT BHU!

After 4 months of intense battle and persistent hard work, our IIT BHU Chess Team A has finally made it to the finals of one of the most prestigious university tournaments of the world, that is the Collegiate Chess League(CCL).

The stakes are high as the winner of the final would bag a whooping $1500. What adds to the excitement is the fact that the final will be streamed on twitch by FIDE International Master and renowned twitch streamer Eric Rosen. It will not only be an entertaining treat but will also be a great learning experience as Rosen will provide deep insights into the intricacies of the games through his exceptional commentary skills.

All the teams participating in the tournament were sorted into 14 divisions, consisting 16 teams each which were further divided into 2 groups of 8 teams. Our team consisting of Utkarsh Dubey(5th year, Mech), Aditya Malla(4th year, Meta), Harsh Dwivedi(4th year, Chem) and Rohan Bobby(2nd year, Chem) were in the 3rd division and they topped their group. On their way to the finals, they had many great wins which included crushing victories over MIT and Yale. This is by far the best performance in CCL by any Indian University.
