It is with deep sense of grief we note the demise of Shri Vijayan, curator, an ever smiling, quiet presence and a friend to all cricketers in Ernakulam.

We have had a special relationship with the father-son duo of Shri Padmanabhan and Shri Vijayan ever since the inception of our tournament (currently known as Coromandel Cement Cricket Tournament) especially for the first 25 years. Even when he started working with KRL, we fondly remember Vijayan coming early to the tournament venue, helping us out and then leaving for KRL. If our tournament was awarded Elite status, Vijayan had a crucial part to play by preparing good wickets that would last a fortnight and help players showcase their talent.

The President and members of ECC bow our heads before Shri Vijayan’s memory. May he have attained Godhead 🙏🏻

40th Coromandel Cement Cricket Tournament

Hosts Muthoot ECC Ernakulam made their their way into the semi-final with a narrow 5 run win over fancied Masters CC Thiruvananthapuram.

In a match shortened to 15 overs a side (wet outfield due to overnight rain), chasing 124 in 15 overs, the Masters batsmen kept in touch with the run rate and seemed to be on the path to victory, Shoun Roger and Vishnu Raj in control with only another 17 runs to get in 13 balls. Even when left arm spinner Jerin PS removed Shoun on the last ball of the 13th over (who had hit him for a six and a boundary earlier in the same over), it looked like Masters’ game to lose. Aditya Vinod who in his earlier spells had accounted for the dangerous opening pair of Rohan Kunnummel and Krishna Prasad bowled a tight 14th over giving away only 6 runs. Aaron Jude who had only 11 runs to defend in the last over, kept things tight - 1,0,2,1,W(run out),W – and ECC’s bowling unit had wrested the win away from Masters.

Batting first, with Akash C Pillai (36) and Anuj Jotin (39) on song putting together 67 runs for the 2nd wicket in 7 overs, ECC were nicely poised to post a high score. However, their lower middle order could not get going and the innings ended at 124/7. Anuraj JS bowled well picking up 3 wickets yielding just 14 runs.

Muthoot ECC 124/7 in 15 overs
Anuj Jotin 39 (29b, 2x6, 2x4), Akash C Pillai 36 (28b, 3x6, 2x4), Anuraj JS 3-14, Vaishak Chandran 2-28

Masters CC 119/6 in 15 overs
Shoun Roger 36 (29b, 2x6, 1x4), Vishnu Raj 31no (24b, 1x6, 3x4), Adithya Vinod 2-17, Sudhi Anil 1-19

40th Coromandel Cement Cricket Tournament

The young bowling brigade of Muthoot ECC eked out a 6 run victory over defending champs BK55, Thalassery in a Pool B league phase match at the Rajagiri College Ground, Kalamassery and kept their semi-final hopes alive.

Chasing 155 to win, BK55 were reduced to 5-22 with Sudhi Anil picking up 3 wickets in the powerplay overs and then again the crucial wicket of COT Farzeen in the 18th over. A 42 run partnership between MP Sreeroop (60no), who waged a lone battle, and Sreehari S Nair for the 8th wicket threatened to take BK55 home, but Abhay Jotin ran Sreehari out putting the pressure back on BK55. Needing to score 16 runs in the last two overs, Aditya Vinod who bowled the 29th over mostly to Sreeroop yielding just one run made it more difficult, and once Anuj Jotin bowled 4 dots in the first 4 balls in the final over yet again to Sreeroop, the chase was effectively rendered impossible.

Earlier, choosing to bat first, ECC were reduced to 6-91 in the 23rd over despite a bright start from skipper Subin S. Powered by the big hitting Bovas M Justin (48 rtd hurt) and his 43 run partnership with Adithya Vinod in just 16 balls ensured that ECC posted a competitive 155 in 30 overs.

Scores_In_Brief

Muthoot ECC 155/9 in 30 overs
Bovas M Justin 48 rtd hurt (28b, 5X6, 2X4), Subin S 30 (44b, 4x4), Akshay Chandran 2-19, MP Sreeroop 2-33, CP Shahid 2-36

BK55 149/9 in 30 overs
MP Sreeroop 60no (78b, 1x6, 6x4), Sudhi Anil 4-20, PS Jerin 2-29
