What happened today at Salt Lake Stadium broke something in a lot of us.

People came from different parts of the city, the state and the country. Some saved money for weeks. Some stood in queues outside the airport to catch a glimpseand still made it to the stadium with zero sleep. Everyone came with one simple hope: to see the man who made them fall in love with football.

Instead, they were pushed aside, blocked, confused, and made to feel invisible.

We hold the organisers, A Satadru Dutta Initiative, directly responsible for this. There was no clarity, no communication, and no respect for the people who actually filled the stadium. While genuine fans struggled to see anything, large sections were cleared and controlled for politicians like Aroop Biswas and his circle, and for celebrities including Subhashree. Their presence and movement inside the stadium clearly took priority over thousands of supporters.

Let us be honest.
When you invite people to a football event and turn it into a political and celebrity showcase, emotions will boil over. Fans were not angry just because Messi left early. They were angry because they were treated as an inconvenience in a space that belongs to them.

This was not about law and order.
This was about disrespect.

No one explained what was happening. No one addressed the crowd. No one took responsibility in the moment. People waited, hoped, and believed, only to slowly realise that they were never the priority.

When human emotion is ignored for long enough, it spills over. What followed was not random madness. It was frustration that had nowhere to go.

We are not justifying the damage that happened. But we refuse to accept the easy narrative that paints fans as the problem while those in power walk away untouched.

Football in Kolkata has always belonged to the people. Students, workers, families, and supporters are the ones who carry this culture every day. It does not belong to organisers chasing optics, politicians using the game as a backdrop, or celebrities occupying space meant for fans.

An apology after the fact is not enough.
There needs to be honesty about what went wrong and accountability for the decisions that were taken. More than anything, there needs to be an understanding that you cannot play with people’s emotions and expect silence.

Today should have been a memory people carried for life.
Instead, it became a reminder of how easily fans are taken for granted.

That hurt will not be forgotten.

A group of Mohun Bagan fans from Presidency banded together to form and give shape to what would become one of the biggest college based football fan club in India.

Presi Mariners have grown from strength to strength with each passing year, and this year we organised an all woman football tournament that we all are very proud of. We organised Noboborsho Cup, and we were graced by dignitaries like Sanjay Sen and Ranjan Choudhury. Albeit with a result not in our favour, we finally organised the Presidency Derby this year. Another great year for us.
