No pain, no gain… Right? When it comes to soreness after a workout, maybe not. Soreness doesn't necessarily dictate whether or not you had a good workout and there isn't always a positive correlation between post workout pain and improvement. On average, the more a person trains, the less likely they are to get sore. So if you've been working out for awhile and find that you aren't getting as sore as you once did, that's generally a positive sign that your body is adapting!
The better you recover, the better you can train. If you are perpetually sore, it can make it tough to come back to the gym and hit it hard the next day. Additionally, extreme soreness can also be a sign of overtraining. More doesn't always equal better! There is such a thing as too much exercise, and if you're constantly hurting that could be your body's way of letting you know you need to ease up a little.
Soreness does not always equate to gains.
Lifting weights does cause micro trauma to your muscle which in turn stimulates growth and that is why you feel sore. But as previously mentioned, your body adapts over time. Things that once made you sore, might not make you as sore in the future. Focus more on how your last few reps feel, progressing each movement in your program, and giving your true best effort during each session. As long as you can check off those boxes, chances are you're on the right track whether you are getting sore or not.
