Why is it that we smile at strangers but snap at the people we love?
We hold doors open for people we’ll never see again.
We say “no problem” to a colleague who wastes our time.
We laugh politely at a joke that isn’t funny.
But at home?
We’re impatient. Distracted. Short.
The people who get our worst are the ones who deserve our best.
I don’t think it’s because we don’t love them.
I think it’s because we’re exhausted from performing for everyone else all day.
By the time we get home — there’s nothing left.
That’s not a relationship problem.
That’s a self-management problem.
And it’s worth thinking about.

Phuket reminded me of something I’d forgotten.
You don’t need permission to just... be somewhere fully.
No agenda. No performance.
No version of yourself you’re maintaining for anyone.
Just you. In a place. Present.
6 million people pass through here in two months. All kinds. All ages. All backgrounds.
And every single one of them had the same face when they hit the water.
Relief.
Like they’d been holding something for a very long time and finally put it down.
I think about that a lot.
Why does it take a flight for us to exhale?
What are we carrying at home that we can’t seem to put down?

You’re standing in clear water.
Cliffs behind you. Noise somewhere else.
And still - most people would bring chaos here.
Location doesn’t create peace.
Standards do.
You can fly across the world
and still carry urgency, insecurity,
the need to prove,
the need to react.
Or you can decide:
Wherever I go,
I stay the same.
Calm.
Measured.
Unavailable for nonsense.
Freedom doesn’t test your happiness.
It tests your discipline.
Next time you change environments,
watch what follows you.
That’s the real work.
If this made you pause - share it with someone who confuses escape with growth.
(boundaries, emotional control, self respect, calm authority)
